Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment as a junior or senior high school student in a Medical Assistant Program.
  • Current CPR certification upon hire or certification obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions and adapt to varying workloads and assignments.
  • Ability to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific principles and collaborate appropriately with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Ability to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures.
  • Effective reading and comprehension skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong medical transcription and spelling skills, with good medical terminology knowledge.
  • Proficiency with computer systems used in physician offices and hospitals to capture data accurately and consistently.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, compensate for staffing needs, and work in other WVU Medicine-owned or operated clinics when staffing requires.
  • Ability to function as a team member with respect to organization, communication, and task prioritization.
  • Required typing and keyboarding skills, along with the ability to listen to and ascertain physician needs.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology demonstrated through testing or completion of formal coursework.
  • Familiarity with physician-office computer systems such as EPIC or a similar system, including electronic scheduling modules and electronic medical records; skills testing is required during the interview process.
  • Competency in clinical and technical skills and ability to complete required training and perform these skills consistently.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling.
  • Visual acuity within the normal range.
  • Ability to exert the stated physical forces required to move objects, including occasional forces of 20 to 50 pounds, frequent forces of 10 to 25 pounds, and constant forces of up to 10 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, copiers, and other business equipment.
  • Ability to handle exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps, cleaning agents, disinfectants, toxic gases, fumes, odors, electrical current, and a high-stress clinical environment.
Responsibilities
  • Perform direct patient assignments under the supervision of a certified Medical Assistant, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Provider.
  • Report pertinent observations and concerns to the Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Provider.
  • Document information in patient charts in accordance with the scope of responsibility and applicable policies and procedures.
  • Assist Medical Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, and Providers with rooming patients, completing forms and assessments, and recording vital signs as directed.
  • Perform clerical tasks, including computer use, chart assembly, information recording, telephone answering, and filing.
  • Scan outside medical records and reconcile laboratory, diagnostic-test, hospital, and consultation reports into the electronic medical record as appropriate.
  • Assist callers and visitors, take written messages, create in-basket messages, and route callers or visitors to the appropriate person.
  • Perform and document quality checks of refrigerator temperature, crash carts, diagnostic equipment, and eyewash equipment as directed.
  • Schedule patient testing procedures such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and mammograms under the direction of a Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, or Provider.
  • Complete on-the-job training and in-service education and perform assigned duties under clinical supervision.
  • Scribe physician findings and related documentation into the permanent office record in accordance with policies and procedures.
