  • At least 8 years of experience in failure and damage analysis, design, construction, and maintenance of structures and building-envelope mechanisms across commercial, residential, institutional, and industrial buildings and infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of structural design principles, load analysis, material properties, and failure mechanisms.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical conclusions clearly and concisely to non-technical stakeholders, interpret complex engineering data, and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Experience reviewing and assessing external forensic or specialty expert opinions for technical accuracy.
  • Experience applying relevant legislation and related documents, including the Health and Safety Act, building codes, and local regulations.
  • Strong understanding of structural materials, including steel, concrete, wood, and masonry, and relevant design codes.
  • Valid Canadian driver's license and access to a vehicle.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, with data management and analysis skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex technical data using critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience analyzing trends to support operational performance.
  • Experience working in the field.
  • Ability to handle multiple investigations simultaneously, prioritize work to strict timelines, and work in inclement weather and varied environmental conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to work at heights, including on roofs or scaffolding, requiring physical agility, balance, and resistance to acrophobia.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout Ontario on short notice.
Responsibilities
  • Perform building and structural failure investigations and determine the causes of failures and damage involving commercial and residential buildings, foundations, structures, and building-envelope mechanisms.
  • Investigate losses at residential, commercial, and industrial sites and assess product, equipment, and material failures to support claims professionals, independent adjusters, and customers. Conduct on-site inspections and forensic evaluations to support claims handling, coverage determination, and recovery efforts against third parties.
  • Analyze building-system failures, determine their causes, evaluate construction quality, and review design or maintenance procedures.
  • Assess physical damage to building components, systems, and materials; determine the extent of damage and required remediation; distinguish loss-related damage from unaffected or pre-existing damage; and recommend repair or replacement considerations.
  • Research failure modes and code requirements and prepare repair or remediation recommendations.
  • Conduct field investigations of structural failures, document work, collect evidence including data, photographs, and videos, interview parties associated with incidents, and safely secure evidence for further analysis and presentation.
  • Perform provincial code and standards compliance analyses and reviews.
  • Provide engineering opinions and technical guidance to claims professionals, leadership, and other stakeholders; prepare clear, concise reports and letters for non-technical audiences.
  • Guide the technical direction of investigations, determine when external specialty expertise is required, review external forensic opinions, and conduct peer reviews of external investigations and opinions.
  • Interact with customers to explain the investigation process, gather relevant information, coordinate site access, and communicate findings without making coverage decisions.
  • Use engineering expertise and data to determine the most plausible cause of a failure, whether design, installation, or maintenance met industry standards or building codes, and whether a loss resulted from design error, manufacturing defect, improper maintenance, or external factors.
  • Contribute engineering expertise to multidisciplinary initiatives and emerging risk areas as required.
  • Collaborate with other groups on multidisciplinary projects to provide solutions for complex losses and failures.
  • Provide guidance to internal and external partners on operationalizing engineering-services strategies.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with commercial buildings.
  • Familiarity with property and casualty insurance, claims processes, and risk-assessment methodologies.
  • Experience testifying in court and previous qualification as an expert.

Aviva and insureMO launch embedded insurance across Europe, starting in Norway

Aviva Insurance Ireland DAC and insureMO, a Singapore-based insurance platform provider, have partnered to offer embedded insurance across Aviva's European business. The product automatically gives customers accident, illness and travel cover based on their location, so they need not buy or manage several policies. The first rollout is live in Norway through distribution partner Kvikk Forsikring AS. Kvikk customers get day-to-day travel cover at home, and travel insurance activates automatically when they go abroad. Aviva says the platform lets it add products, partners and markets without major changes to its core systems. insureMO supplied product configuration, rating, policy administration, claims and customer servicing, working with MSG Global.

Aviva looks fairly valued at $8.72 versus $8.80 fair value, but its 36.8x P/E raises concern

Aviva has appointed pension veteran Mark Thompson as chair of its UK Life and Pensions Independent Governance Committee. The move puts governance in focus for the insurer, whose shares last closed at £6.87. The stock is up 3.87% over 90 days and 8.18% in total shareholder return over one year. It fell 2.80% over 30 days and is up 0.59% this year. One popular valuation narrative puts fair value at about £6.93, making the shares roughly 1% undervalued. A separate model suggests £13.15. The price-to-earnings ratio of 36.8 is well above the peer average of 22.4. Risks include reliance on the mature UK market and the Direct Line integration.

Aviva names Mark Thompson chair of UK pensions governance committee at $26.2B insurer

Aviva has appointed Mark Thompson as chair of its UK Life and Pensions Independent Governance Committee. The committee oversees the value for money and governance of Aviva's workplace pensions for UK customers. Thompson has held senior roles across the UK retirement sector, with experience in investment and pension governance. Aviva is a £20.6b insurer offering insurance, retirement and wealth products in the UK, Ireland, Canada, India, and China. Workplace pensions and retirement savings are central to its growth story, so oversight of those schemes matters to investors. Heavy UK exposure and rising regulatory costs remain key risks, along with competition from insurers such as Legal & General and Phoenix.
