Survey results: digitalisation & AI Drive Competitive Advantage in Automotive Manufacturing.

Survey results: digitalisation & AI Drive Competitive Advantage in Automotive Manufacturing. Automotive Manufacturing Solutions Published 21 July 2026 - 10:53 Modified 21 July 2026 - 11:57 Macroeconomic challenges are increasingly driving digitalisation & AI, but human factors are both key enablers and barriers to a successful digitalisation journey Download the report below. The vast majority of automotive manufacturers embarked on digital transformation programmes many years ago. However, for many, the final destination can often appear elusive and never quite complete as new technologies and requirements emerge and external factors evolve. Clearly, the priorities for digital transformation are shifting. A complex and unforgiving external environment, characterised by regional wars, trade disputes, rising input costs and supply chain disruption, means that digital transformation is taking on new urgency. For now, though, companies are weathering multiple storms. Digital transformation remains challenging; not least as competition for the necessary skills and capabilities intensifies, leading to skills shortages in many areas. In fact, human factors can be both key enablers as well as barriers to a successful digitalisation journey. To better understand the current state of digitalisation across automotive manufacturing, Automotive Manufacturing Solutions, in partnership with Kyndryl and Microsoft, recently collaborated on the Automotive Manufacturing AI & Digital Operating Models Survey 2026 to tap into our industry expert audience of automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. The survey findings have been summarised in an exclusive free to download whitepaper 'Digitalisation & AI Drive Competitive Advantage in Automotive Manufacturing'. Here are three key takeaways from the report: 1. Digital transformation priorities are increasingly driven by macroeconomic challenges Automotive manufacturers have rarely faced such a complex macroeconomic environment as they do today. Those pressures are unforgiving and it is no surprise to see that digital transformation priorities are increasingly focused upon how they can help to address this complex set of challenges. Our survey audience identified tariffs and trade barriers as the most significant challenge facing manufacturing operations in their company. The key problem around tariffs is uncertainty: few companies know how or when these trade barriers will be lifted, making it difficult for them to plan with long-term strategic goals such as digital transformation. Trade barriers, and wider geopolitical risks, also have knock-on effects in terms of greater cost pressures and supply chain disruption. In addition, digital transformation is both a challenge and an opportunity. Asked about the key challenges facing their operations, respondents identify digital transformation as the third most significant challenge. And yet, as we shall see in this report, digital transformation can be empowering in overcoming many of these challenges. Q. What are the MOST SIGNIFICANT challenges facing the automotive manufacturing operations in your company? (Select up to THREE) Which challenges are most significant for automotive manufacturing operations? Respondents could select up to three · % of respondents Tariffs & trade barriers Cost pressures (energy, raw materials, components) Digital transformation & data management Supply chain disruption / component shortages Labour shortages / skills gaps Rapid innovation in AI & automation EV transition / multi-powertrain management Shift to more modular / flexible manufacturing Faster product lifecycles Regionalisation, localisation & hyper-localisation 2. Digital transformation can drive competitive advantage The urgent need for efficiency, cost reduction and enhanced productivity are driving forces behind digital transformation initiatives. Today, there is a clear link between the macro challenges facing the industry, and a growing recognition that digital transformation can be part of the solution to gain competitive advantage. However, focussing digital transformation upon cutting costs and improving productivity raises potential risks around neglecting the growth and innovation potential that digital tools and AI should enable. Notably, there were a wide-ranging 2nd tier of responses including factors which indirectly also lead to enhancing competitive advantage. Q. Within your company, what are the MOST SIGNIFICANT issues driving investment in digitalisation? What are the most significant issues driving investment in digitalisation? % of respondents Production efficiency, cost reduction & productivity Organisational transformation & competitive pressure Supply chain visibility & network optimisation Customer-driven innovation and experience Core technology advances (AI, IoT, digital twins, AR/VR) EVs & increasing product complexity Accelerating vehicle development cycles / speed to market Digital thread & lifecycle intelligence Government initiatives and policy support 3. Human factors are both enablers and barriers to a successful digitalisation journey Investing in digital transformation is hard and requires patience. These are never-ending projects due to the fast-changing nature of the technologies that underpin them, and the ongoing volatility of the wider economic climate and business environment. However, the human factors are seen as essential to a successful digitalisation journey - and they require ongoing, continuous investment to keep up with emerging trends. At the same time, digital and AI skills are increasingly at a premium and they can make or break the success of many transformation agendas. Having a strong core data foundation is the second most important enabler of success. This is rightly seen as a critical area for investment as, without this in place, technologies built on top cannot function effectively. Q. What do you think are the THREE most important enablers to increase the chances of success in technology transformation? What are the most important enablers of success in technology transformation? Respondents selected their top three · % of respondents Investment in skills and capabilities A strong core data foundation A clear strategy with defined KPIs and ROI Strong relationships with third-party vendors and consultants A longer-term focus Strong buy-in from executive leadership A culture that embraces experimentation and fast failure Associated business transformation Centralised allocation of financial resources 4. Integration with legacy systems is a challenge for AI More specifically, regarding the challenges associated with implementing AI in automotive manufacturing, the most pressing of all is the difficulty of integrating AI with existing automation and legacy IT systems. This has been a major challenge of digital transformation for many years, and slow progress with replacing and updating legacy systems makes it even more acute today. Cybersecurity concerns are also near the top of the list of concerns - companies are worried about potential breaches and vulnerabilities that can be introduced as they integrate new and potentially unfamiliar technologies. Q. What are the most significant challenges for your company in terms of implementing AI in automotive manufacturing? (Select up to THREE) Which challenges are most significant for implementing AI in automotive manufacturing? Respondents could select up to three · % of respondents Integration with existing automation & legacy IT systems Cybersecurity challenges Data governance and data quality Skilled labour shortages & capability gaps Getting financial / budget approval Demonstrating clear, measurable ROI Regulatory complexity Reluctance to embrace change Lack of strategic clarity / objectives This survey was compiled in partnership with Kyndryl & Microsoft

Workforces are less ready for AI as adoption revs up.

Workforces are less ready for AI as adoption revs up. July 21, 2026 A global study of 1,100 senior business and technology leaders across eight countries, revealing a notable drop in workforce AI readiness and a widening gap between AI expectations and execution. Kyndryl engaged Edelman Intelligence for the study that was done via online survey and telephone interview between March 24 and April 30, 2026. Respondents include CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, CTOs, senior directors and business unit leaders. They are based in Brazil, France, Germany, India, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. Kyndryl said the data suggest that AI success is not driven solely by different strategies, use cases or technologies - it's driven by whether organizations redesign work and manage those changes throughout their organizations. The data also shows that trust in AI can be built through deliberate operating model and governance changes. The findings come as companies accelerate AI adoption and invest heavily to realize value at scale. Kyndryl cites a Gartner report that shows worldwide spending on AI is forecast to total $2.52 trillion in 2026, a 44% increase year-over-year. "This is a critical moment for global enterprises as they race to adopt AI, redesign workflows and pursue innovation, yet they're finding that their greatest assets - their people - need more attention," said Kim Basile, CIO at Kyndryl. Basile said the data shows that the organizations investing in people - whether it's rethinking roles and workflows, dedicating resources for upskilling and retraining, or guiding employees through change - are experiencing positive outcomes at a much higher rate. "AI's ability to reshape work is challenging organizations to reshape their workforce more rapidly than ever before," said Mark Paulek, chief HR officer at Kyndryl. "The leaders pulling ahead are aligning skills, roles and decision-making with how work is actually changing. When people understand their role in that system, trust and performance scale together." According to the study, 57% say AI is embedded in core business processes or deployed broadly across the enterprise; last year, 35% said AI was fully integrated across their organizations. Only 32% have achieved at least one of their top two AI goals; just 11% have achieved both. The study identifies a Pacesetters group, the 9% of organizations that have done three things: they redesign roles around AI, implement change management so the workforce understands its new operating model and has guardrails in place, and have built workforce readiness. These three behaviors are the operational foundations that consistently distinguish the organizations achieving the strongest results from AI. As they do these things, at each stage they are building the important governance frameworks. Pacesetters are roughly twice as likely to have fully implemented every governance dimension measured. Pacesetters are 1.5 times more likely to achieve AI-related revenue growth, and 1.6 times more likely to report better innovation for products and services. Business leaders consistently rank workforce readiness among the most challenging aspects of AI adoption. Just 23% of organizations think their workforces are fully ready for AI, a six-point drop from last year. Also, 79% agree that the speed of AI will outpace their organizations' workforce, governance and operating models. The risk of falling behind is increasing as more organizations adopt autonomous AI agents, as 81% of organizations expect AI agents to make impactful decisions for their organizations within the next year, but today just 25% completely trust AI systems operating without human oversight. The report identifies actions that organizations are taking to get their workforces ready for an AI-enabled workplace. In terms of redesigning roles for the future, 61% say their organizations have already redesigned roles, and 24% are creating new roles focused on AI management. On addressing skills gaps, half of leaders (52%) say it has become more challenging to find employees with the right skills to advance their AI strategy, and a third have fully implemented training programs focused on helping employees effectively collaborate with AI tools. On building trust through governance, a third of organizations (33%) claim they have clear policies on which decisions AI can and can't make, and 27% are using a registry and monitoring capabilities for all their AI systems. Organizations with stronger governance assert their workforces trust more in AI strategy and execution, and high-trust organizations are significantly more likely to report transformative outcomes from their AI investments. - Advertisement -
