The announcement is expected to include the iPhone 18 series and Apple's first foldable smartphone, rumoured to be called the iPhone Ultra. Apple shares have risen approximately 8% over the past month and are up 21% year to date. The company reported strong June quarter results, with revenue increasing 16% year over year to nearly $109 billion and earnings climbing 27% to $29.4 billion. For the September quarter, growth is expected to moderate, with year-over-year sales growth projected between 9% and 11%.
Apple shares fell 1.1% to $324.66 on Friday following a patent lawsuit targeting its Face ID technology. BASF subsidiary trinamiX alleges Apple violated seven patents related to technology that distinguishes real skin from spoofing materials, according to Reuters. The Texas lawsuit covers multiple iPhone generations, iPad Pro models, and other Apple devices. TrinamiX seeks unspecified damages and an injunction against further infringement. Apple had not publicly responded at the time of the report. The legal challenge affects Apple's core revenue stream. iPhones and iPads generated $218.22 billion during the nine months ended June 27, representing 59.9% of total revenue. The stock trades 14.1% above its $284.55 GF Value, indicating investors continue paying a premium despite the legal uncertainty.
Apple's rumoured foldable iPhone is facing production challenges, with early manufacturing running at only a few hundred units per day, according to reports. The bottleneck stems from Apple's strict quality-control standards as manufacturing partners work to improve yields. TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously estimated second-half 2026 assembly shipments of roughly 7 million to 8 million units, with pricing around $2,300 to $2,500. This would position the device well above Apple's conventional Pro models. Limited supply could reinforce the foldable iPhone's premium image but may also limit near-term financial impact. For comparison, Kuo expects roughly 20 million to 22 million iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max shipments during Q3, highlighting how small the foldable launch may initially be. Apple has scheduled a product event for 9 September.
Apple faces a proposed £2 billion ($2.7 billion) class action lawsuit in Britain over its App Tracking Transparency rules. App developers claim the privacy features disadvantage third-party advertisers whilst favouring Apple's own advertising business. The complaint has reached Britain's Competition Appeal Tribunal. Sept 3: BASF sued Apple on Thursday, accusing the iPhone maker of infringing the German chemical company's patented face authentication technology in many iPhone and iPad models. In its complaint, BASF's trinamiX unit said it spent the last decade developing technology to address a security gap that makes conventional face recognition systems vulnerable to spoofing, where fraudsters defeat face unlock features by using photographs, 3D-printed masks and silicone replicas. The complaint said Apple did not employ BASF's patented technology when it launched face authentication, known as Face ID, in 2017 with the iPhone X, but now uses it in a variety of iPhone 15, iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPad Pro and other products. "Apple knew or should have known of the high probability that updating its iPhones and iPads to incorporate Face ID using material and skin detection" infringed seven trinamiX patents, causing "substantial damages and irreparable injury," the complaint said. BASF's lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Midland, Texas seeks unspecified damages and a halt to further infringements. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Cupertino, California-based company sold $196.5 billion of iPhones and $21.7 billion of iPads in the nine months ending June 27. According to the complaint, trinamiX's origins date from 2010, when BASF scientists working on organic solar cells made unexpected discoveries that led to the building of early three-dimensional camera prototypes. BASF created trinamiX in 2014 as a stand-alone entity to develop advanced 3D and material sensing technologies, and trinamiX holds more than 800 granted or pending patents worldwide, the complaint said.
