We gave away over 100 bikes at the BMAGIC Backpack Giveaway in Bayview-Hunters Point.

Sfbike gave away over 100 bikes at the BMAGIC Backpack Giveaway in Bayview-Hunters Point. By Qamuuqin Maxwell on September 18, 2026 On a cloudy Saturday in August, its Bike it Forward program held its biggest bike distribution of the year at the annual BMAGIC Back to School Celebration and Backpack Giveaway. With the help of 40 volunteers, Sfbike gave away a grand total of 106 bikes, each with a set of lights, locks, and helmets to youth of all ages - sparking a lifetime of bike joy and instilling an early habit of active transportation. The event itself was amazing, with dozens of kids trying out their new wheels immediately after receiving them. Sfbike is grateful for the partnership of BMAGIC, who hosted the backpack giveaway, as well as YBike and its Safe Routes to School program, who led the drop-in Learn to Ride class at the event. With the help of its partners, kids and families left the distribution excited and confident riding around on their new bikes. Sfbike is already seeing the impact of this event. After her child received a bike at BMAGIC, Zengxian wrote to Sfbike, "my daughter loves the bicycle and often rides it in the evenings. It has brought us so much joy and created many happy moments for our family." Sfbike is thrilled to have offered families a new way to connect with each other and their neighbors, and the fun that comes with riding a bike. For Sfbike at SFBike, the BMAGIC bike giveaway was the culmination of months of staff preparation, as well as months of volunteer efforts at its weekly Community Repair Nights. Sfbike is grateful for generous grants from New Belgium Brewing and Redwood Credit Union. San Francisco Bicycle Coalition members John and Leslie Woodward offered their major gift as a challenge to its wider community to contribute. With their support and the support of its members and donors, Sfbike met its fundraising match goal of $10,000 and raised a total of $24,518 to support its work to create equitable access to biking for families throughout its city. These funds help Sfbike not only at its annual BMAGIC bike giveaway, but also power its Bike It Forward program throughout the year. Since the BMAGIC bike giveaway, Bike It Forward has been busy! Sfbike provided bikes and a group ride experience for 14 children in foster care in partnership with SFCASA, Sfbike gave away an additional 14 bikes at a Transit Fair in partnership with PODER, and will be distributing bikes and teaching residents how to ride at two events with Mercy Housing in China Basin and at St. Anthony's Giving Thanks event on the Golden Gate Greenway. Its members make this work to expand access to bikes possible. And Sfbike'd love your help to keep biking it forward - please consider donating today to help power its work to get more kids on bikes!
