About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is required; a master's degree in Computer Science or Information Technology may apply.
  • Several years building platform or data-platform capabilities end to end, with three to five years given as a useful guide.
  • Strong hands-on Kubernetes production experience, including operating stateful distributed systems such as databases, brokers, and query engines, and resolving issues under pressure.
  • Hands-on experience operating at least one core data system (Kafka, Iceberg/Trino/Spark, or Airflow) as a platform service.
  • Experience running data exploration and visualization tooling such as Grafana, Apache Superset, Elasticsearch, and Kibana.
  • Solid infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform or OpenTofu, and GitOps delivery with FluxCD or Argo CD.
  • Working command of CI/CD pipelines and release strategy, using GitLab or an equivalent.
  • Sound grasp of cloud-native security, including least privilege, network segmentation, secrets management, identity, and supply-chain integrity.
  • Operational maturity in defining SLOs, incident response, and safe upgrades with no data loss.
  • Proficiency in Python and either Go or Bash, and comfort working on Linux.
  • Treat infrastructure as code that is version-controlled, reviewed, tested, and secured.

Responsibilities

  • Build a configurable cloud foundation in Terraform so that clusters with different profiles can be provisioned from well-factored code.
  • Create small, composable infrastructure-as-code modules and apply versioning, review, and testing so they are reliable and reusable; maintain desired state in Git, reconcile the platform through GitOps, and detect configuration drift.
  • Build and operate the infrastructure for a Kubernetes data platform, including a lakehouse on Apache Iceberg with a Polaris catalog and Trino, Kafka event streaming, Airflow orchestration, managed databases such as CloudNativePG, and ADLS Gen2 object storage.
  • Deploy, secure, scale, and upgrade data-platform systems as platform capabilities, maintaining multi-tenancy, role-based access control, governance, and FinOps practices.
  • Operate the catalog and metadata layer for data discovery, cataloguing, lineage, and classification, and operate Polaris for catalog-level access.
  • Enforce data-management conventions and controls such as naming standards, access policies, and retention requirements, without owning the meaning of the data.
  • Build self-service interfaces so teams can provision Kafka topics and credentials, Iceberg tables and catalogs, Airflow connections, namespaces, and query access without manual platform-team requests.
  • Mature self-service capabilities and document the workflows with runbooks and guides.
  • Own the data platform at runtime; define and measure service-level indicators and objectives, including data freshness and availability.
  • Write runbooks that make failures recoverable and lead incident response when the platform degrades or data stops flowing.
  • Perform cluster, broker, and engine lifecycle upgrades with no data loss and minimal disruption, and trace failures to root cause.

Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of SQL and data modelling; valued but not required, as the role focuses on infrastructure rather than the data itself.
  • Depth in Azure services, including AKS, ADLS Gen2, AI Foundry, Key Vault, Entra ID, and Private Endpoints.
  • Kafka and Strimzi experience, including topic, schema, and credential management.
  • Experience with lakehouse and query engines including Iceberg, Polaris, Trino, and Spark on object storage.
  • Airflow experience, including providers and connection management.
  • Metadata and governance experience with DataHub, lineage, classification, and catalog role-based access control.
  • Experience with managed databases on Kubernetes, such as CloudNativePG or similar.
  • Experience building or operating an internal developer or data platform.
