  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Have strong programming skills in Python.
  • Have experience with data analysis and relevant tools such as NumPy, PyTorch, TensorFlow, GDAL, Rasterio, or GIS software.
  • Have knowledge of, or a strong interest in, remote sensing, image processing, machine learning, and deep learning.
  • Have a basic understanding of GIS principles and geospatial data formats, including raster data, point clouds, and coordinate systems.
  • Be able to work independently, structure and document work systematically, and communicate results effectively.
Responsibilities

  • Acquire and collect satellite, drone and ROV data for the area of interest.
  • Pre-process and co-register multi-source satellite, drone and ROV data to a common spatial and depth reference.
  • Develop and apply a data fusion model, such as a machine-learning or deep-learning-based model, to combine multi-source bathymetric data into a unified depth map.
  • Perform elevation and terrain analysis and build a 3D reconstruction of the basin, combining bathymetry and surrounding terrain, to estimate water volume.
  • Evaluate and validate the fused bathymetry model performance against reference or ground-truth measurements.
  • Carry out several field campaigns during the thesis period to collect validation data.
Desired Qualifications
  • Swedish language skills are considered an advantage.
  • Experience working with satellite imagery, drone data, or sonar/acoustic survey data is considered an advantage.

About the company

Vattenfall is a Swedish state-owned energy company that develops and operates power generation and electricity supply. It primarily builds and runs wind farms and solar parks, and sells the generated electricity to customers across Europe. Its products work by converting natural resources—wind and sunlight—into electrical power at its plants, which is then distributed through the energy grid. Unlike many competitors, Vattenfall is owned by the Swedish government, which shapes its strategy toward publicly accountable, large-scale renewable energy investments. The company differentiates itself through its long-term state ownership and its focus on expanding renewable power across Europe, rather than pursuing a broad mix of private investments. Its goal is to be a leading European renewable energy company by growing wind and solar capacity and transitioning its portfolio away from fossil fuels toward sustainable, low-carbon power.
