Roche is a global leader in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. It develops medicines and diagnostic tools that help detect, monitor, and treat diseases, using research and biotechnology to drive new therapies and tests. Roche combines drug development with in-house diagnostic products to support personalized medicine, where treatments are tailored to individual patients based on test results. Its approach differs from many peers by integrating drug discovery with diagnostic capabilities and by expanding its research through strategic acquisitions (like Genentech) to strengthen its biotechnology and R&D capabilities. The company’s goal is to improve patient outcomes and healthcare worldwide by delivering reliable medicines, accurate diagnostic tests, and data-driven care.

What believers are saying

  • Roche reported 6% H1 2026 sales growth and reaffirmed mid-single-digit 2026 guidance.
  • Xolair, Hemlibra, Ocrevus, Phesgo, and Vabysmo drove H1 2026 growth.
  • Alzheimer's and blood-cancer assets expanded in 2026, including pTau217, Susvimo, and SIM0660.

What critics are saying

  • China diagnostics pricing reforms cut Roche diagnostics sales 15% in 2026 first half.
  • Vabysmo missed U.S. expectations in July 2026, exposing brittle ophthalmology execution.
  • Biosimilar erosion threatens Roche's aging biologics portfolio; Rituxan-style decline can hollow future cash flows.

What makes Roche unique

  • Roche combines pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, leveraging 4,500 U.S. cobas analyzers for launches.
  • Roche and Eli Lilly won FDA clearance for Elecsys pTau217 on September 9, 2026.
  • Roche keeps buying pipeline optionality, signing Simcere SIM0660 and Treeline in 2026.

Tempus AI raises $600M to scale AI-enhanced liquid biopsy platform for cancer recurrence detection

Tempus AI has raised $600 million in Series C funding to scale its machine learning platform for cancer recurrence detection through liquid biopsies. The investment was led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, with participation from Roche and Merck. Phase II trial data showed the AI-enhanced liquid biopsy analysis reduced false-negative results by 37% compared to conventional methods. The platform uses deep learning algorithms trained on over 12,000 genomic profiles to identify circulating tumour DNA fragments shed by residual cancer cells. A 2025 Nature Medicine study reported the system achieved 92% specificity in detecting minimal residual disease across breast, lung, and colorectal cancers. According to SEC filings, 45% of funds will support FDA pre-market approval trials, whilst 30% will fund global expansion into EU and APAC markets.

Roche commits $75M upfront in blood cancer deal worth up to $1.53B

Roche has committed $75 million upfront to acquire global rights to Simcere Pharmaceutical's experimental blood-cancer drug SIM0660. The deal could reach $1.53 billion if the drug meets development, regulatory and commercial milestones, with additional tiered royalties. The agreement grants Roche exclusive development, manufacturing and commercialisation rights outside Simcere's retained markets. The upfront payment represents just 4.9% of the deal's total potential value. SIM0660 remains in preclinical stages. Roche generated CHF11.9 billion in core operating profit during the first half of the year. The company's US-quoted shares fell to $53.55 on Tuesday following the announcement.

Roche and Eli Lilly win FDA clearance for Alzheimer's blood test for over-55s

Roche and Eli Lilly have received FDA clearance for a blood test that helps detect signs of Alzheimer's disease in people aged 55 and older experiencing cognitive decline. The Elecsys pTau217 test measures a blood biomarker to determine whether patients are likely to have brain changes associated with Alzheimer's. The test can be performed using more than 4,500 Roche laboratory analysers already installed across the United States. Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics plan to offer the test through their laboratory networks, expanding access nationwide. Pricing has not been disclosed. The clearance follows European approval in May. Blood-based testing could provide a simpler alternative to existing methods like PET imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis, which can be expensive and invasive.

Roche gets FDA clearance for first blood test to assess Alzheimer's amyloid pathology

Roche has received FDA clearance for its Elecsys pTau217 blood test, marking the first FDA-cleared, single-biomarker blood test for assessing amyloid pathology associated with Alzheimer's disease. The test, developed with Eli Lilly, is designed for use in both primary and specialty care settings for individuals aged 55 and older showing signs of cognitive decline. The assay provides positive, intermediate, and negative result categories using validated clinical cutoffs across care settings. Results support both rule-in and rule-out assessment of amyloid pathology when interpreted alongside clinical information. The test will be available across Roche's installed base of over 4,500 cobas laboratory instruments in the US, enabling broad access through existing laboratory infrastructure. This clearance represents a significant advancement in Alzheimer's disease diagnostic capabilities.
