Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and state-specific training are required for the position.
  • Must obtain valid continuing education credits as required by the state, if applicable.
  • At least one year of experience is required.
  • A good working knowledge of the Medication Observation Record is required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with management, associates, residents, family members, and outside contacts.
  • Clerical and typing skills, including typing, data entry, and filing, are required.
  • Must be able to make independent decisions.
  • Must disclose any medication that might impair the ability to perform the job safely or competently.
  • Must complete a Level 2 background screening through the Florida Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse.
Responsibilities
  • Check each of the six rights of medication administration three times: when the medication is removed from the medication cart or cabinet, immediately before assisting with the medication, and immediately after assisting with the medication.
  • Assist residents with medications according to their Medication Observation Record.
  • Document clearly and accurately on the Medication Observation Record after medication is taken or given, refused, held, discontinued, changed, disposed of, or returned, in accordance with policy.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, organized medication cart or cabinet and restock it as needed.
  • Provide residents with treatments required by their individual service plans.
  • Promote and protect residents’ rights to safe, prompt, and confidential treatment.
  • Answer and respond immediately to resident calls.
  • Respect residents’ rights to refuse medication or treatment.
  • Explain to residents what medication is being given and why before assisting with or administering medication.
  • Observe residents for adverse medication reactions and report them immediately to the DRC or supervisor.
  • Report all medication errors honestly and immediately.
  • Seek immediate assistance and advice from a supervisor when there are doubts or questions about assisting with or administering medications or treatments.
  • Respond to on-the-job injuries in accordance with policy.
  • Notify a supervisor of concerns or questions presented by residents’ family members.
  • Adhere to universal precautions and infection-control guidelines.
  • Dispose of infectious or potentially infectious waste according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations.
  • Demonstrate respectful behavior in interactions with residents, families, staff, and visitors.
  • Perform specific work duties assigned by a supervisor.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Meet health standards for appearance, sanitation, and hygiene.
  • Work in a safe and alert manner and take ownership of associate and resident safety.
  • Attend required community meetings and participate in Life Enrichment activities when able.
  • Complete required courses in accordance with HRA University.
  • Perform required duties on a regular and predictable basis.
  • Become familiar with reporting a missing person using the Safe Return program or an equivalent.
  • Help maintain a safe and secure environment for community residents.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in a long-term care community or geriatric nursing is preferred.
  • Experience in emergency care and first aid is preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Outlook software is preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology is preferred.
