Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement comprehensive laboratory quality assurance plans, and establish regional laboratory service-quality standards with technical and clinical staff.
  • Establish short- and long-term quality assurance goals and objectives aligned with strategic and business plans; investigate and resolve laboratory problems at all levels.
  • Partner with technical supervisors to inspect regional laboratory locations for compliance with regulatory requirements, quality assurance systems, testing procedures, personnel standards, physical plant, and equipment.
  • Ensure laboratory quality assurance systems comply with current regulations and legislation; monitor trends and guide laboratory personnel in developing action plans and responses.
  • Monitor and maintain quality systems, train users, and develop quality administrative policies with internal teams.
  • Conduct audit surveys to verify regulatory compliance and coordinate the selection, ordering, submission, and response process for proficiency-testing surveys.
  • Promote total quality management tools and techniques to improve laboratory operations.
  • Ensure initial testing and setup procedures, including verification, assay development, calibration, and sensitivity studies, for new or replaced instruments; create and implement validation plans.
  • Communicate information and provide advice to advance projects; build cross-functional relationships; provide actionable feedback, influence, mentor, and coach team members; and foster open dialogue.
  • Drive multiple work streams by identifying member and operational needs, translating business strategy into requirements, developing procedures and policies, setting standards, measuring progress, resolving complex issues, and developing work plans.
  • Coordinate and distribute resources, remove obstacles, guide performance, develop contingency plans, and influence completion of project tasks.
  • Develop and use technical and non-technical training materials; resolve training-resource issues; assess training needs; initiate regular, in-service, and competency training; and maintain personal training.
  • Maintain testing and training standards by ensuring personnel competency meets defined standards.
  • Monitor policies and work instructions for alignment with regulations, license requirements, accreditation standards, and inspection checklists for laboratories and testing facilities.
  • Drive adherence to requirements for recruitment, processing, testing, storage, and distribution of materials and samples; evaluate accreditation inspections; communicate with inspectors, lab supervisors, and managers; influence license renewal; and coordinate documentation updates.
  • Serve on committees to communicate regulatory and accreditation changes, inspection citations, events, and trends relevant to laboratory services, quality, and training.
  • Guide cross-functional teams in evaluating and improving quality management systems; coordinate local lab operations, quality, and utilization; and ensure alignment with local and national standards, regulations, and technology initiatives.
  • Guide efficient operations, quality, service, patient safety, customer satisfaction, and cost effectiveness through evaluation and standardization of services and processes.
  • Evaluate work-plan processes to improve systems across the continuum of care; promote testing methodologies, processes, and technology that can improve service, quality, or efficiency; and resolve complex laboratory and patient/member problems.
  • Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, inventory and maintenance systems, supplies, usage and cost planning, and technical and non-technical project management and status reporting for local, regional, and national initiatives.
  • Develop policies and procedures for audit and process-improvement projects, and drive internal audits to verify process quality.
  • Plan for deviations from expected quality-control results and guide proper testing and verification of results before release.
  • Manage specimen collection to ensure specimens are collected and processed according to established time and quality standards; analyze proficiency-testing reports and resolve concerns; and adapt strategies to address novel pre-analytical workflow problems.

  • A quality and process improvement certification, such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Total Quality Management.

Dr Taejoon Ahn named CEO of Washington Permanente Medical Group, overseeing 1,200 clinicians

Washington Permanente Medical Group has appointed Taejoon Ahn, MD, MPH, as its new CEO and executive medical director, effective 30 September. Dr Ahn will lead the multispeciality medical group, which comprises over 1,200 clinicians caring for more than 550,000 Kaiser Permanente members across Washington state. Dr Ahn brings over 15 years of physician executive experience. He most recently served for 12 years as president of John Muir Medical Group. He succeeds Dorian Reid, MD, who served in an interim capacity since September 2025. WPMG is the independent, physician-owned medical group that provides care exclusively for Kaiser Permanente members in Washington. Dr Ahn will partner with regional president Cynthia Dold to continue delivering integrated care across the state.

Kaiser cuts 147 admin jobs across California offices

Kaiser Permanente is laying off 147 business and administrative employees across California in November. The cuts affect 16 locations in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside and Alameda counties, with the largest reductions being 72 positions in San Diego and 20 in Pasadena. The Oakland-based non-profit said the layoffs do not include direct patient care staff and will not affect care quality. Kaiser stated it continually evaluates how it organises work to ensure high-quality care remains affordable and accessible. Affected employees will receive support to explore other opportunities within Kaiser, and where appropriate, severance packages and outplacement services. Kaiser employs approximately 180,000 people in California.

Healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente named Shaun Smith executive vice president and chief people officer on Sept. 9, according to a news release. Smith will lead the organization's HR strategy and operations as well as lead a multiyear effort to strengthen its culture. He joins Kaiser Permanente from NewYork-Presbyterian, where he was a group senior vice president and chief people and culture officer. He will begin in the role on Oct. 12. Lyra Health. Mental healthcare benefits provider Lyra Health named Leslie Riggs CPO effective Sept. 14, the company announced Sept. 2. Riggs is especially well-suited to the role due to "her experience scaling global HR operations, her deep understanding of the connection between organizational performance and workforce wellbeing, and her commitment to our mission," Jennifer Schulz, CEO of Lyra Health, said in a news release. Riggs joined the company from Sketchers, where she led global HR. Halff. Leigh Hollis has been promoted to CPO, infrastructure consulting firm Halff announced Sept. 2. She will support the HR function in her new role while leading Halff's continued focus on project delivery and quality. She joined the firm at the Fort Worth, Texas, office in 2005 and most recently served as senior VP and an operational leader for Halff's Dallas, Frisco and Richardson offices in Texas. Ascensus. Financial services company Ascensus brought Edward Greene on board as chief human resources officer effective Sept. 14, the company announced. Posted: Sep 28, 2026 / 02:49 PM PDT Updated: Sep 28, 2026 / 04:26 PM PDT (KRON) - Kaiser has announced plans to cut nearly 150 jobs across the state of California. The layoffs, according to a filing with the Employment Development Department, will result in 147 people losing their jobs. Among those layoffs are 34 Bay Area job cuts. The healthcare giant will be cutting 11 jobs at its headquarters in Oakland and another job at a separate facility in Oakland on Harrison Street. In Pleasanton, Kaiser plans to cut 22 jobs. The majority of the layoffs are spread across the rest of the state with employees in Pasadena, Irvine, Corona, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Folsom and San Diego all set to lose their jobs. The job cuts, which were announced late last week take effect on Nov. 20, according to state filings. All of the layoffs are described as permanent. "Kaiser Permanente continually evaluates how we organize our work and deploy resources to help ensure high-quality care remains affordable and accessible for our members and patients," a company spokesperson told KRON4. "We recently notified 147 employees in a number of business and administrative functions that their positions will be eliminated. These positions do not provide direct patient care." Kaiser said it would be supporting affected employees as they pursued other opportunities within the company and where appropriate, providing severance, career support and outplacement services.

The Wendy's on 875 W. Fifth St., just east of Keystone Avenue, officially reopened Saturday, Sept. 26, a company spokesperson confirmed with the Reno Gazette Journal. To celebrate the reopening, the location will hold a grand opening event at 8 a.m. Oct. 13. To further sweeten the pot - or the Frosty - the first 100 customers in line will receive free food for a year. Customers who get the free food promotion will receive their choice of one free premium sandwich or premium salad once a week with any food purchase. Premium sandwiches include Wendy's premium beef burgers such as the Dave's Single, Double and Triple, Baconator and Big Bacon Classic. Also included are premium sandwiches such as the Asiago Ranch Chicken Club, Spicy Asiago Ranch ChickenClub and the Crispy Panko Fish Sandwich. The West Fifth Street Wendy's has been closed for five months as it underwent an extensive remodel. The location is one of the company's older stores. The property was first built in 1977 - just eight years after Wendy's was founded - according to Washoe County Assessor records. The remodel occurred as Wendy's aims to regain the No. 2 spot for America's largest fast-food burger chain behind McDonald's. Wendy's was bumped down earlier this year to No. 3 by a rising Burger King, which implemented menu changes via a Whopper refresh and new chicken nuggets while beefing up its value offerings. In addition to welcoming an In-N-Out Burger and Reno's first Cracker Barrel, the Keystone area will also be the site of a brand new Kaiser Permanente clinic - the first newly constructed ground-up facility for the healthcare company since it entered the Nevada market via an insurance deal with Renown Health.
