Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or a related field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • The ability to call for and/or render care in the event of a patient emergency is required.
  • Certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification is required upon hire.
  • New York State licensure as an Athletic Trainer is required upon hire.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required upon hire.
Responsibilities
  • Provides athletic training outreach services in a high school or organization setting, including evaluating injuries, applying first aid, coordinating referrals to medical care, communicating with parents or guardians and physicians, developing conditioning programs during recovery, instructing athletes in home rehabilitation programs, teaching functional progression for return to participation, and educating athletes, parents or guardians, and coaches regarding conditioning, weight control, diet, injury prevention, and injury care.
  • Evaluates prior injuries and develops and teaches injury-prevention programs; evaluates injury rates and etiology; suggests changes to sports techniques and practice procedures; and educates coaches, coaching staff, and student athletic trainers in approved procedures.
  • Maintains inventory, assists with ordering supplies as needed, and documents patient progress and response to treatments in the medical record.
  • Evaluates patients' functional status and abilities and disabilities for participation in activities; applies or directs the application of measures and tests; plans treatment programs based on the physician's diagnosis, prognosis, and orders; determines rehabilitation types and frequencies; communicates care plan options; gathers supportive information; and recommends program modifications to physicians and others involved.
  • Under the direction of a registered nurse, assists with patient needs through the call bell system; provides range of motion in accordance with the plan of care; assists with transfers; teaches safe transfer techniques; safely uses transfer equipment; supports patient mobilization; promotes functional gains; and participates in creating mobility plans.
  • Ensures side rails and safety equipment are properly positioned and operational, follows hospital safety policies and procedures, reports hazards, continuously observes assigned patients, and provides care for patients of different age groups.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, keeps current through professional articles and journals, attends continuing education courses in the athletic-training field, and attends selected professional meetings and seminars.
  • Supports orthopedic sports physicians in clinic by documenting, taking histories, performing examinations, and discussing exercise progression with patients.
  • Assists in the ambulatory surgery center with patient-care education and post-operative exercise guidelines.
  • Performs evaluations and physical testing for workplace-health clients to develop exercise programs for injury prevention and health maintenance.
  • May assist with sports performance programs, including performance training, active release technique, and group exercise classes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
