Requirements
  • 8–12 years of experience in product design, UX, or service design, with a portfolio demonstrating complex, shipped software products.
  • Strong interaction design skills covering flows, states, information architecture, and low- and high-fidelity prototyping.
  • Experience thinking beyond screens, including journey mapping, service blueprints, system maps, and non-software touchpoints.
  • Experience planning and conducting qualitative user research, rather than only reviewing others’ findings.
  • Experience designing AI-powered or data-driven interfaces, including making algorithmic outputs legible and trustworthy and applying human-in-the-loop patterns.
  • Experience working with or alongside systems that impact youth and families, or a demonstrated commitment to learning about these systems with humility, curiosity, and care.
  • Ability to establish and lead a design practice, set priorities, and make progress independently.
  • Ability to move cross-functional work forward through influence, building alignment across engineering, product, data, and program teams.
  • Ability to communicate and facilitate clearly by framing problems, making thinking visible, and guiding groups through ambiguity toward decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively with ambiguity and fast-moving priorities and decide where deeper work is needed.
  • Sound judgment and empathy when designing for people navigating stress and crisis.
  • Experience navigating competing priorities and aligning engineering, product, program, and leadership stakeholders.
Responsibilities
  • Own interaction design for ConnectMe and CheckForUs, including flows, states, information architecture, and interaction patterns.
  • Design new features before implementation, including AI chat, the Community Responder copilot, the expanded workbench, and improvements based on real user feedback.
  • Build low- and high-fidelity prototypes to test ideas quickly and communicate intent to engineering.
  • Partner with engineers to design feasible, high-quality solutions and participate in implementation decisions.
  • Establish and maintain a design system and component standards across both modules and multiple state deployments.
  • Plan and conduct research with internal users, transition-age youth, and kin caregivers across all active states through interviews, field visits, usability testing, and observation.
  • Synthesize research findings into clear insights that shape product development.
  • Ground product decisions in the real-world context of users navigating significant life stress.
  • Frame problem statements and guide the team through ambiguity before selecting solutions.
  • Map the end-to-end experience of youth and families from first contact through case resolution, including internal staff workflows across a caseload.
  • Design and evolve human-AI collaboration patterns that clarify where AI assists, where humans decide, and how that boundary is communicated.
  • Produce service blueprints, experience maps, and system-level artifacts that inform platform and program operations.
  • Identify experience gaps in operations and propose solutions spanning software and service delivery.
  • Apply service design thinking to other Think of Us initiatives where systems-level design can shape the approach.
  • Define how AI capabilities such as draft assessments, support plans, resource matching, and urgency scoring appear in interfaces.
  • Design interfaces that help users understand what AI is doing and why, while allowing them to override it.
  • Partner with the data and AI team on AI quality, evaluation, and trust-building design patterns.
  • Ensure AI-driven recommendations and copilot experiences are ethical and appropriate for a vulnerable population.
Desired Qualifications
  • Background in civic technology, social impact, healthcare, or human services.
  • Experience designing for vulnerable populations in crisis services, case management, behavioral health, or similar contexts.
  • Familiarity with AI-augmented or human-in-the-loop service models.
  • Experience building or contributing to design systems.

Think of Us is a nonprofit research and design lab reforming the U.S. child welfare system through partnerships with government, lawmakers, and foundations to design and implement scalable, data-driven solutions at federal, state, and local levels. It centers the lived experiences of foster youth and families and uses technology, data, and design to address root causes such as poverty-related neglect, promote kinship care, and support youth aging out. Its Virtual Support Services provide housing, mental health, and employment resources, and its COVID-19 response helped families access over $50 million in resources and disburse $400 million in federal relief for former foster youth. Funding comes from grants and philanthropic partnerships, including a major $47.5 million Audacious Project commitment with a goal to raise $100 million.

What believers are saying

  • May 2026 Hilton Foundation gave $1.53 million for federal foster care implementation.
  • June 2026 Texas kinship micro-grants show productized support still reaches caregivers.
  • August 2026 donation pages said nearly $50 million committed toward the $100 million campaign.

What critics are saying

  • Grant dependence concentrates risk; Audacious Project funding ends after 2028 if fundraising stalls.
  • Child welfare reforms depend on ACF, HUD, and state adoption cycles, slowing impact.
  • If philanthropic renewals weaken, Think of Us loses operating runway and scale.

What makes Think of Us unique

  • Sixto Cancel built Think of Us from foster-care lived experience, not academic theory.
  • May 2026 Christine Norbut Beyer joined, strengthening federal child welfare implementation credibility.
  • Think of Us combines research, technology, policy, and direct kinship-cash pilots.
