Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required; an associate degree is desirable.
  • Two or more years of law enforcement experience are required.
  • Additional related experience and formal education may substitute for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis, with 30 college credits equivalent to one year of experience.
  • Candidates must maintain certification as specified by the Maryland Police Training Commission.
  • Candidates must possess certification as a police officer by the Maryland Police Training Commission.
  • Candidates must have a valid Maryland non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license.
  • Candidates must have thorough knowledge of citizens' rights and responsibilities and federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Candidates must be skilled in detecting situations that imperil public safety; operating emergency vehicles under all conditions; caring for and using firearms, self-defense tools, and criminal detection devices; communicating effectively orally and in writing; operating two-way radios and telephones in varied environments; conducting confidential investigations; and applying knowledge, experience, and reason to make prompt and effective decisions in routine and critical situations.
  • Candidates must be able to interact sensitively with a diverse population, maintain composure and professionalism, perform physically demanding activities, lift, drag, and carry heavy objects, establish effective working relationships, follow oral and written directions, provide guidance and training or supervision to others, respond to situations requiring physical stamina and force, enter and exit vehicles frequently and quickly, and work in and wear personal protective equipment.
  • Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries or examinations.
  • Employees may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise a shift and/or complex specialized unit under general supervision.
  • Inspect police officers and security guards.
  • Assign patrol responsibilities, establish priorities, evaluate work performance, and instruct, direct, and guide personnel on a patrol shift.
  • Conduct investigations and prepare detailed computer-generated and verbal reports on criminal offenses, traffic accidents, personal injuries, and missing persons.
  • Observe supervised personnel and report misconduct, incompetence, neglect of duty, or rule violations to the superior officer.
  • Patrol campus to deter and detect criminal activity and identify hazards.
  • Confer with the incoming supervisor at the end of the tour of duty.
  • Enforce University rules, regulations, and state laws.
  • Evaluate subordinates and encourage personnel to achieve maximum efficiency.
  • Relay orders to subordinates and pass information up the chain of command.
  • Ensure the accuracy, legibility, and thoroughness of reports submitted by subordinates.
  • Perform specialized program assignments, develop programs, and train police, staff, and students on campus safety programs.
  • Conduct required daily roll calls and inspect the assigned shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Training certifications in defensive tactics, firearms, and investigations from the Maryland Police Training Commission.
  • An associate degree.
