  • You are experienced in programming commercial liquid-handling or laboratory automation platforms and integrating robotic manipulators.
  • You are proficient in C# or Python for building software and integration frameworks.
  • You are familiar with molecular biology, biochemistry, or wet lab workflows to help translate scientific needs into engineering solutions.
  • You have prototyping design experience, including CNC milling, laser cutting, and CAD.
  • You are skilled at using APIs and software development kits to interact with complex laboratory software ecosystems.
  • You are experienced in designing workflow orchestration or scheduling systems that manage shared resources, dependencies, and priorities.
Responsibilities
  • Design, program, and troubleshoot high-throughput laboratory workflows.
  • Build orchestration systems, hardware abstraction layers, and instrument drivers that manage retries and allow unattended operation.
  • Implement logging, metrics, and alerts across hardware and software to identify failures, and fix root causes using software or vision models instead of relying on manual workarounds or vendor support.
  • Build systems to maintain a digital representation of the laboratory, including sample identity, instrument state, and resource availability, and connect instruments through application programming interfaces and integrate them with laboratory information management systems and electronic laboratory notebooks.
  • Manage hardware requirements, site constraints, reagent selection, and work-cell integration from initial design to deployment.
  • Work directly with software engineers, automation scientists, and hardware engineers to turn scientific processes into technical architectures.
Desired Qualifications
  • You are skilled with computer vision models such as OpenCV, YOLO, or SAM for automated error handling and object or anomaly detection.
  • You are experienced in training, evaluating, or adopting artificial intelligence and machine learning models, including reinforcement or imitation learning for robotics.
  • You are capable of building and evaluating artificial-intelligence-enabled systems, defining evaluations, establishing guardrails for determinism versus nondeterminism, and measuring reliability.
  • You are knowledgeable about sensors, microcontrollers, and task-and-motion planning.
  • You are familiar with cloud infrastructure and digital twin simulation.

Roche is a global leader in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. It develops medicines and diagnostic tools that help detect, monitor, and treat diseases, using research and biotechnology to drive new therapies and tests. Roche combines drug development with in-house diagnostic products to support personalized medicine, where treatments are tailored to individual patients based on test results. Its approach differs from many peers by integrating drug discovery with diagnostic capabilities and by expanding its research through strategic acquisitions (like Genentech) to strengthen its biotechnology and R&D capabilities. The company’s goal is to improve patient outcomes and healthcare worldwide by delivering reliable medicines, accurate diagnostic tests, and data-driven care.

Roche expands cyclospora testing portfolio with three new assays for US public health labs

Roche has expanded its cyclospora testing portfolio with two new research-use-only molecular PCR tests to support U.S. public health response efforts. The LightMix Modular Cyclospora assay specifically detects cyclospora, whilst the LightMix OneTube Gastro Para 2 assay detects multiple parasites including Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia, and Cyclospora cayetanensis. Both tests work with LightCycler 480 and LightCycler PRO instruments. They complement an existing assay compatible with cobas 5800, 6800, and 8800 systems. The portfolio offers flexible testing options with one, three, or six targets. Roche acquired TIB MOLBIOL in December 2021 to expand its PCR-test capabilities for emerging infectious diseases. The company's testing infrastructure includes assays for hepatitis, HIV, respiratory illnesses, and vector-borne diseases.

Roche receives FDA clearance for cobas BV/CV assay for fast vaginitis diagnosis

Roche has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its cobas BV/CV assay, a molecular diagnostic test that detects bacterial vaginosis and Candida vaginitis from a single vaginal swab sample. The PCR-based test aims to improve diagnostic accuracy compared to traditional methods like microscopy and pH testing, which have misdiagnosis rates approaching 50%. Bacterial vaginosis affects approximately 27% of women of reproductive age in North America, whilst up to 75% of women experience Candida vaginitis at least once in their lifetime. The assay uses real-time PCR technology to identify specific bacteria and yeast responsible for these conditions. The test expands Roche's sexual health testing menu on its cobas 6800/8800 systems, enabling comprehensive testing for multiple conditions from a single sample. Commercial launch is expected later this year.

Roche's Susvimo receives EU approval recommendation as first continuous nAMD treatment requiring just two refills per year

Roche's Susvimo has received a positive recommendation from the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use for treating neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Susvimo is the first continuous delivery treatment that offers an alternative to standard eye injections for nAMD, requiring only two refills per year through the Contivue refillable implant. The recommendation is based on data from the LADDER, Archway and Portal studies, which showed Susvimo maintained vision equivalent to monthly intravitreal ranibizumab injections, with data supporting vision maintenance up to seven years. Approximately 95% of patients treated with Susvimo required no supplemental treatment. nAMD is a leading cause of blindness in people over 60 and affects 1.7 million in the EU. A final decision is expected from the European Commission soon.
