Here's what to know about Ontario's upcoming 100-kilometre-long trail. Sep 28, 2026 Kimia is a Toronto-based writer, reality TV addict, plant mom, and an adventurous home cook. Ontario is getting a massive new trail that will eventually stretch 100 kilometres through the GTA and surrounding region, connecting the Hills of the Headwaters in Orangeville all the way to Lake Ontario in Port Credit. The Credit Valley Trail is being developed as a continuous pathway through the watershed, with the goal of creating new recreational spaces while also restoring the region's natural habitats. The once-in-a-lifetime project is also being designed to reflect Indigenous history, knowledge, and culture in the Credit River valley, home to the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and a gathering place for many Indigenous Peoples. Each site will invite trail users to "pause, reflect, and connect - with the land, with culture, and with the voices that continue to shape this valley," according to the Credit Valley Conservation (CVC). Once complete, the trail is planned to include seven Indigenous Placemaking Sites, developed with guidance from Anishinaabe Elders and Knowledge Keepers. The latest site to receive funding is the Giigoonh (Fish) Doodem Indigenous Placemaking Site at Charles Sauriol Conservation Area in Caledon. Last week, 407 ETR announced $1.5 million in funding for the CVC and the Credit Valley Conservation Foundation (CVCF) to support the development of the site, which is expected to begin construction next year. Located along the banks of the Missinnihe (Credit River), the site will feature an interpretive trail celebrating Fish clan families while sharing Anishinaabe knowledge systems, traditions, and cultural teachings. The first Indigenous Placemaking Site along the trail, the Ajijaak (Crane) Doodem, opened at Island Lake Conservation Area in Orangeville in June 2024. "The Credit Valley Trail is one of the most ambitious conservation and community-building initiatives in our watershed. This investment demonstrates what is possible when organizations come together around a shared purpose," said Terri LeRoux, chief administrative officer at CVC. "The Credit Valley Trail will connect communities physically, culturally, and ecologically, creating experiences that inspire stewardship, belonging, and a deeper appreciation for the landscapes we share. Together, we are building a legacy that will benefit people and nature for generations." Last month, the project marked a major milestone when the CVC officially opened a new 40-metre pedestrian bridge on its Tranmer property, part of the Upper Credit Conservation Area. Located north of the Dufferin County Road 109 bridge, the structure is one of the first major infrastructure achievements for the Credit Valley Trail, and brings the region even closer to having a continuous, 100-kilometre route. So far, the CVC says 43 kilometres of the trail are already connected, with 57 kilometres remaining. The CVCF has supported the trail's development since 2020 through a 10-year fundraising campaign with a $10 million goal, reaching 65 per cent of its target thus far through corporate and community support. Looking ahead, the 407 ETR has commissioned Indigenous artist Phillip Cote to create a mural that transforms the Mississauga Road bridge on Highway 407 ETR into a "powerful visual expression of Indigenous knowledge, identity, and connection to the land." The mural will draw on the history and teachings of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and is scheduled for completion in October. Kimia afshar mehrabi, blogto. Sep 25, 2026, 16:36 ET Investment will support development of the Giigoonh (Fish) Doodem Indigenous Placemaking Site in Caledon and create a new space for learning, reflection and connection MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 25, 2026 /CNW/ - Today, 407 ETR announced $1.5 million in funding for Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) and Credit Valley Conservation Foundation (CVCF) to support the development of the Giigoonh (Fish) Doodem, the second Indigenous Placemaking Site along the Credit Valley Trail. Located along the banks of the Missinnihe (Credit River) at Charles Sauriol Conservation Area in Caledon, the Giigoonh (Fish) Doodem Indigenous Placemaking Site is being developed through the leadership of the Credit Valley Trail Indigenous Roundtable and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. The space will be guided by an interpretive trail that celebrates the Fish clan families while sharing Anishinaabe knowledge systems, cultural teachings and traditions. Designed as a place of connection and learning, it will provide opportunities for gathering, reflection, cultural education and ceremony. Construction is expected to begin in 2027. "At 407 ETR, we believe the places that connect communities should also reflect and celebrate the stories that shape them," says Jose Espinosa, President & CEO, 407 ETR. "We're proud to support the second Indigenous placemaking site along the Credit Valley Trail. Together, with our partners, we're helping create a space where people can learn, reflect and deepen their understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories and connections to the land." "This transformational investment is about much more than building a trail-it is about building relationships, creating places where people can learn, gather and experience the enduring stories of this landscape, and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations," says Dayana Gomez, Executive Director, CVCF. "Through this remarkable partnership with 407 ETR, we are advancing a shared vision where conservation, Indigenous leadership and community come together to create experiences that inspire stewardship, learning and connection. Together, we are helping create one of Canada's most meaningful examples of how conservation, philanthropy and Indigenous leadership can advance reconciliation while protecting nature for generations to come." "The Credit Valley Trail is one of the most ambitious conservation and community-building initiatives in our watershed," says Terri LeRoux, Chief Administrative Officer, CVC. "This investment demonstrates what is possible when organizations come together around a shared purpose. Through our partnership with 407 ETR and the Credit Valley Conservation Foundation, we are creating healthier landscapes, stronger communities and new opportunities to celebrate Indigenous knowledge and the cultural heritage of this watershed. The Credit Valley Trail will connect communities physically, culturally and ecologically, creating experiences that inspire stewardship, belonging and a deeper appreciation for the landscapes we share. Together, we are building a legacy that will benefit people and nature for generations." "The Missinnihe, the Credit River, and the lands and waters of its watershed have sustained the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation since time immemorial and remain an integral part of who we are as a people, says Darin P. Wybenga, Heritage Interpreter, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. "Our longstanding work with Credit Valley Conservation provides an important opportunity to ensure that our history, knowledge, responsibilities and continuing relationship with these lands and waters are reflected within the Credit Valley Trail. We are grateful for this generous $1.5 million gift and for the commitment it represents. The development of the Giigoonh Indigenous placemaking site will create a meaningful place where our people can gather, share teachings and ceremony, and where visitors can learn about the enduring presence and perspectives of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Investments such as this help ensure that our stories and responsibilities to the land are carried forward for generations to come." Seven Indigeneous Placemaking Sites are planned along the Credit Valley Trail. The first, the Ajijaak (Crane) Doodem or Crane Gathering Space in CVC's Island Lake Conservation Area in Orangeville opened in June 2024 with support from 407 ETR. The Credit Valley Trail is envisioned as one of Canada's leading landscape-scale conservation initiatives. When complete, it will stretch 100 kilometres from the Hills of the Headwaters in Orangeville to Lake Ontario in Port Credit. Beyond creating new opportunities for recreation, it will protect and restore natural habitats, improve ecological connectivity, strengthen climate resilience and create spaces where Indigenous knowledge, history and culture are meaningfully reflected throughout the watershed. 407 ETR marks Pollinator Week with native plant giveaway and expanded partnership with Canadian Wildlife Federation. PR Newswire Today at 2:07pm PDT $2 million investment supports habitat near the Highway 407 ETR corridor and beyond, helping protect monarch migration routes and strengthening regional biodiversity. TORONTO, June 26, 2026 /CNW/ - This Pollinator Week, 407 ETR is expanding its partnership with the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF), committing $2 million over four years to restore and protect pollinator habitat in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). This next phase builds on a successful flagship initiative focused on enhancing biodiversity along the Highway 407 ETR corridor and beyond - land known as 'rights-of-way' that plays a meaningful role in supporting pollinators, including monarch butterflies. Monarch butterflies rely on native plants to fuel their annual migration between Canada and Mexico. Through this partnership, 407 ETR is supporting large-scale habitat restoration, conservation leadership and community engagement. "The Highway 407 ETR corridor closely aligns with the monarch butterfly migration route," says Jose Espinosa, President & CEO, 407 ETR. "Through our partnership with CWF, we're not only restoring vital pollinator habitats in municipalities along the corridor - we're helping build healthier, more resilient ecosystems across the GTA." From 2023 to 2025, the program supported 15 restoration projects from Burlington to Bowmanville, restoring nearly 15 hectares across the GTA. Over the next four years, it will expand to 26 additional projects and 35 hectares - helping create and strengthen critical habitat for pollinators, including monarch butterflies and native bees. Combined, the sponsorship will ultimately support the restoration of 50 hectares of native meadow habitat for pollinators across the GTA between 2023 and 2030. "Pollinators connect us all," says Sean Southey, CEO, Canadian Wildlife Federation. "407 ETR's sponsorship allows CWF and our partners to restore habitat, inspire conservation action and help people become part of the solution. We are grateful for 407 ETR's commitment to nature and excited about the difference that we can make together for monarchs, native bees, and the ecosystems that sustain us." As part of this partnership, 407 ETR and the Canadian Wildlife Federation are expanding community engagement initiatives to connect people directly with conservation efforts. This includes native plant giveaways across the GTA to support pollinator-friendly gardening at home and the development of a Virtual Canadian Centre for Monarch and Pollinator Conservation Hub to broaden access to education and resources across the region. Fast Facts * There are over 200,000 kilometres of roadways in Ontario, representing tens of thousands of hectares of vegetated land with potential to provide pollinator habitat. * There are more than 800 species of native bees in Canada[1], and 8 are considered at risk[2] . * The eastern population of the monarch butterfly has declined by more than 80% over the past 25 years[3] . * 407 ETR is proud to support pollinator awareness and education as a sponsor of Bees: A Story of Survival at the Royal Ontario Museum on now until October. The new immersive experience explores the critical role bees play in its ecosystems with the beauty they provide through art. * GTA residents can support pollinators with native species for their gardens. Native plants have co-evolved with the wildlife of that area and are often their perfect food.
