About the company

PIC is a UK specialist insurer that de-risks defined benefit pension schemes by offering buyouts and buy-ins. In a buyout, PIC takes on all assets and liabilities and pays future pensions directly; in a buy-in, it holds a policy as a scheme asset while trustees maintain administration. It funds these promises with premiums invested in long-term assets, including UK infrastructure and social projects. Its clients include FTSE 100 companies, multinationals, and public sector bodies, and it is regulated by the PRA and FCA.

What believers are saying

  • PIC wrote £6.8 billion new business in 2025, including Rolls-Royce, despite volatility.
  • Athora’s March 2026 capital injection adds growth firepower and private-credit sourcing through Apollo.
  • Reading’s £200m-plus Ebb & Flow deal expands inflation-linked living-sector cashflows for decades.

What critics are saying

  • Athora integration and HQ relocation to the UK by late 2027 create execution risk.
  • Rivals Rothesay, L&G, and Aviva keep squeezing pricing in the pension buyout market.
  • PIC depends on UK pension de-risking; a stalled buyout pipeline would crush growth.

What makes PIC unique

  • PIC dominated UK DB pension risk transfer after Athora closed acquisition on 27 March 2026.
  • PIC pairs £54.8 billion assets with £15 billion UK housing and infrastructure investments.
  • PIC’s 99% customer satisfaction and 36,000-person Rolls-Royce buyout prove servicing depth.

PIC completes $5.5B Rolls-Royce pension buyout in nine months

Pension Insurance Corporation has completed a £4.3 billion buyout of the Rolls-Royce UK Pension Fund, covering all 36,000 members just nine months after signing the initial buy-in agreement with the trustee. PIC appointed Brightwell as its administration partner to ensure service continuity. Brightwell established a dedicated office in Derby, and the existing Rolls-Royce administration team transferred to Brightwell to retain expertise. The transition represents a significant milestone in PIC's commitment to customer care for policyholders. The rapid completion was achieved through close collaboration between PIC, the pension fund trustees, and Brightwell. The new Derby office was officially opened by Baggy Shanker, Labour MP for Derby South and former Rolls-Royce employee, who welcomed the retention of skilled work in the region.

PIC buys Lincoln MGT's Reading BTR scheme in £200m-plus deal.

PIC buys Lincoln MGT's Reading BTR scheme in £200m-plus deal. Pension Insurance Corporation (PIC) has acquired Ebb & Flow, a 598-home built-to-rent (BTR) development in Reading from Lincoln MGT, for more than £200m. The fully operational scheme was developed by Lincoln MGT, the joint venture between Lincoln Property Company and MGT, and is part of the wider £850m mixed-use Station Hill urban redevelopment. Ebb & Flow's amenities include fitness studios, roof terraces, club lounges, private dining locations and pocket parks. The acquisition is PIC's largest investment in the living sector to date, as well as one of the largest acquisitions of an operational BTR asset outside central London. It adds to PIC's four existing BTR assets: New Victoria in Manchester; One Eastside in Birmingham; The Wiltern in Ealing, west London; and Arbour in Milton Keynes. James Agar, head of real estate origination at PIC, said: "The acquisition of Ebb & Flow aligns with PIC's BTR investment strategy, which sets out a targeted approach to acquiring well-located, high quality developments in strong locations such as Reading. "The significant demand for professionally managed rental housing across the UK supports sustainable, inflation-linked cashflows that match PIC's pension liabilities over coming decades. "Ebb & Flow supports PIC's long-standing strategy of investing in the UK's structurally undersupplied living sector to deliver tangible social value. Fully let, best-in-class operational assets represent strong relative value at this point in the market cycle, delivering attractive risk-adjusted returns, as we navigate higher interest rates and the persistently tight credit spread environment." Callum Thorneycroft, managing director AT MGT Investment Management, added: "The acquisition of Ebb & Flow by an investor of PIC's quality underscores the best-in-class design and delivery executed by Lincoln MGT. This continues the JV's track record of attracting institutional capital to the landmark Station Hill development." CBRE advised PIC on the transaction.
