Requirements
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered / Licensed Practical Nurse with the applicable provincial licensing body.
  • Possession of valid basic life support CPR C and Standard First Aid.
  • Must be a competent person as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Experience in geriatric, rehabilitation, or long-term care nursing is essential.
  • Knowledge of designated assisted living, dementia care, and home care is an asset.
  • Possession of good leadership, communication, and diplomatic relation skills.
  • Possession of skill in coordinating and supervising a comprehensive nursing care program.
  • Current, within six months, Vulnerable Position/Sector Screening (VPS).
Responsibilities
  • Ensure the maintenance of medical and nursing records and nursing audits according to policies and procedures.
  • Work with the Director of Care or Health and Wellness Manager and Executive Director in the recruitment and hiring process.
  • Follow up on incident reports or concerns identified in the 24-hour report and report the plan of action to the Director of Care or Health and Wellness Manager as needed.
  • Attend shift reports while providing support and guidance to staff in attendance.
  • Attend staff, management, and nursing-related meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with standards of care brought forward by governing bodies.
  • Assist the Director of Care or Health and Wellness Manager, residents, and families with move-in information, assistance, and assessments.
  • Maintain contact with residents to ensure a high quality of care.
  • Review each resident's profile and care plan to ensure problems are addressed appropriately and individual needs are met in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate and provide nursing orientation for all new nursing or Health Care Aide hires.
  • Provide input and information to the Director of Care or Health and Wellness Manager regarding yearly performance evaluations of nursing and Personal Support Worker staff.
  • Ensure the availability and maintenance of nursing department supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain working relationships with staff, residents, families, physicians, other professionals, and the community, and provide pertinent resident-care information to the Director of Care or Health and Wellness Manager.
  • Provide nursing care in accordance with administrative policies, physician's orders, established standards, nursing principles, and resident requirements.
  • Assess residents' conditions by recognizing and interpreting signs and symptoms and, where appropriate, initiate remedial health measures.
  • Ensure the recording and safe keeping of all drugs, including controlled drugs and narcotics, according to policy and procedure.
  • Ensure Registered Practical Nurses and Unregistered Care Providers order or reorder drugs and maintain accurate records according to established procedures.
  • Ensure Registered Practical Nurses and Unregistered Care Providers correctly process all physician orders and follow established procedures.
  • Maintain nursing knowledge and skills through seminars and courses.
  • Submit yearly learning plans to the Director of Care or Health and Wellness Manager during the annual performance appraisal.
  • Assist the Director of Care or Health and Wellness Manager with monthly reports for the Executive Director and Senior Management.
  • Assume administrative duties as required during the Director of Care or Health and Wellness Manager's absence.
  • Schedule and find replacement staffing for the nursing department when staff call in sick, and work the shift if a replacement cannot be found.
  • Observe and promptly report changes in residents' physical and emotional conditions to the Director of Care or Health and Wellness Manager.
  • Actively ensure Occupational Health and Safety guidelines are followed.
  • Act as a Building Supervisor as needed.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

  • Post-graduate study in geriatrics is desirable.
