  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program is required.
  • If not nationally certified as an AMT, RMA, NCMA, or CCMA, the employee must obtain Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry within six months of hire.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office, is required.

Responsibilities
  • Interview patients and accurately obtain demographic and insurance information.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and collect patient portions such as co-pays according to collection policy.
  • Attempt collection from self-pay patients and refer them to the financial counselor for charity-care assessment.
  • Maintain an average error rate of 5% or less over 90 days and complete the end-of-day review before ending each shift.
  • Greet and escort patients to exam rooms, obtain vital signs and weight, record the chief complaint or reason for visit, review medications and allergies, update patient histories, and inform the provider of preventive-care needs.
  • Assist providers with examinations and immunizations.
  • Give patients instructions as directed by the provider.
  • Clean exam rooms after patient visits and practice Standard Precautions.
  • Provide telephone support using appropriate telephone technique.
  • Receive and process messages accurately and promptly, screen urgent calls, and keep providers informed.
  • Maintain clinic supplies, including reordering and stocking.
  • Store supplies and medications according to practice standards, check for expired items, and transport instruments in biohazard containers for reprocessing.
  • Notify the secretary of diagnostic studies and referrals requested by the provider and assist with scheduling when necessary.
  • Maintain clinical patient records and review records before scheduled visits.
  • Participate in prescription renewals for patients.
  • Participate in gathering data for quality measures.
  • Ensure equipment is in proper working order and included in the Preventive Maintenance Program.
  • Participate annually in policy and procedure reviews and propose changes as needed.
  • Participate in hospital-wide and department-specific quality-improvement initiatives, recommend process improvements, report service-delivery quality issues, and support organizational quality goals.
  • Participate in emergency and disaster-preparedness planning and drills and, when called upon, participate in the hospital's emergency response within the scope of professional and personal ability.
