  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited internal medicine residency program is required.
  • MD/DO licensure, DEA registration, and BLS/ACLS certification are required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide phone advice, medical evaluation, and treatment for inpatient BMTCI patients and ambulatory patients who call with medical problems, within the granted scope of practice and privileges.
  • Remain in house for the duration of each shift and provide night and/or weekend coverage for inpatient BMTCI patients while assisting with triage calls from patients outside the hospital.
  • Evaluate and manage patients with the BMTCI Attending, discussing new admissions and clinical care issues arising during the shift with the treating inpatient team and attending physician.
  • Stabilize patients and optimize safety; defer non-urgent interventions to a BMT Attending when the patient's condition permits.
  • Discuss BMTCI-related inpatient decisions and management with an attending, including any new diagnosis or treatment requiring attending input; do not prescribe chemotherapy, manage immunosuppressive drugs, or treat opportunistic infections without documented discussion with an attending.
  • Contact the patient's transplant/cell therapy physician or the BMTCI Inpatient MAC, RIC, or ICET Attending when the patient's condition deteriorates, a new medical condition is suspected, or a change in prognosis indicates medical intervention.
  • Complete a standard history and physical for new inpatient admissions and discuss management with the appropriate attending before initiating non-urgent measures.
  • Communicate services and treatments rendered to the appropriate attending so follow-up can be arranged.
  • Promptly answer outpatient calls and provide medical advice; arrange urgent evaluation at a local hospital or Moffitt as appropriate, and admit or place outpatients on observation status when needed after discussion with the appropriate attending.
  • Document all phone advice in the medical record and notify the primary transplant/cell therapy physician; contact the appropriate physician when uncertain about phone advice.
  • Refer patients showing signs or symptoms of an acute coronary event or stroke to the nearest emergency room promptly, recommend that caregivers call 911, and do not direct those patients to Moffitt.
  • Provide care to BMT and ICE-T patients under the supervision of the BMT and ICE-T attendings.
  • Perform admissions, appropriate orders, progress notes, EHR orders, handoffs, patient assessments and reassessments, and discharges as appropriate under attending supervision.
  • Conform to applicable policies and procedures covering physician practices and practice within BMTCI.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing oncology patients is preferred.
  • Prior experience in a BMTCI inpatient clinical practice setting is preferred.
