About the job

Requirements
  • Build and operate meaningful production software, not only prototypes or narrowly bounded features.
  • Have exceptional technical foundations and reason from first principles when existing abstractions stop helping.
  • Move fluidly between shaping the product, designing the system, writing code, reading unfamiliar code, and understanding production behavior.
  • Have depth in at least one part of the stack and enough range to follow important problems wherever they lead.
  • Debug effectively by forming hypotheses, following evidence, and understanding unexpected behavior.
  • Balance speed with judgment, including choosing simple solutions, investing in foundations appropriately, and avoiding perfectionism and careless technical debt.
  • Have strong product instincts and care about the user experience.
  • Build production software both with and without artificial intelligence assistance.
  • Inspect, test, explain, debug, and take responsibility for artificial-intelligence-generated code.
  • Communicate clearly, disagree directly, and make technical tradeoffs understandable to non-engineers.
Responsibilities
  • Create candidate and employer experiences that make it easy to demonstrate ability, understand the resulting signal, and act on it.
  • Develop the primitives for creating, delivering, evaluating, and continuously improving rigorous assessments and realistic work challenges across many roles.
  • Own work end to end, from understanding users and shaping the product through system design, implementation, deployment, observation, and iteration.
  • Work with assessment experts, operators, and users to determine what should be automated, what should remain human, and how they should fit together.
  • Build evaluation systems with consistent, interpretable, auditable, and gaming-resistant results, including human review, testing, and safeguards.
  • Connect assessment performance, employer decisions, and on-the-job outcomes to improve product usefulness and predictiveness.
  • Apply artificial-intelligence models where they materially improve assessment creation, evaluation, or candidate and employer experiences, and build evaluations and guardrails for them.
  • Treat reliability, security, privacy, accessibility, and candidate experience as foundational product properties.
  • Improve architecture, testing, observability, performance, and developer velocity according to business needs.
  • Establish technical judgment, operating habits, and quality standards for future engineers, and help identify and recruit future team members.

About the company

8VC is a venture capital firm based in Austin that funds and builds technology and life sciences companies. It invests across all stages, from seed to growth, with typical checks ranging from half a million to $15 million, and focuses on software, IT infrastructure, life sciences, healthcare, defense, and logistics. The firm also runs an incubator program called 8VC Build to launch new ventures by leveraging its network and entrepreneurial experience to fill market gaps. Notable investments include Anduril Industries, Oculus, Guardant Health, Oscar, Wish, and Flexport, with a portfolio comprising hundreds of deals and several unicorns and IPOs. The overarching goal is to “fix a broken world” by partnering with entrepreneurs to create solutions for complex challenges.

Bedrock Robotics raises $600M at $4.1B valuation to scale autonomous excavators

Bedrock Robotics has raised a $600 million Series C at a $4.1 billion post-money valuation. CapitalG and Emergence Capital co-led the round, bringing the San Francisco company's total funding to nearly $1 billion. New investors include US Innovative Technology Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Temasek. Existing backers 8VC, Georgian, Valor Equity Partners, and NVIDIA also took part. The startup, founded in 2024 by former Waymo engineers, retrofits existing heavy equipment with autonomous systems. In mid-August 2026, its fully autonomous excavators began paid work on live commercial job sites. It has more than doubled its customer volume since 2025. Contractor Haydon is deploying the technology at a Texas site. Bedrock will use the funds to expand deployments across the US.

Hexagon Bio raises $62M Series C to take novel-payload cancer drug HEX-360 into the clinic

Hexagon Bio has closed a $62 million Series C round to move its lead cancer drug, HEX-360, into human trials. The Column Group led the round, with existing investors Nextech Invest, Deviation Capital, 8VC, and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board taking part. HEX-360 is an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) that targets HER2. It carries a new type of payload, a translation inhibitor, designed to work where cancer cells have become resistant to current ADC payloads such as topoisomerase inhibitors. The company expects to begin a Phase 1 trial in the first half of 2027. The money will also fund work on other novel and dual payloads from its ADC platform. In preclinical models, HEX-360 matched or beat a comparator similar to ENHERTU® and produced durable responses in topoisomerase inhibitor-resistant models.
