Requirements
- A bachelor's degree is preferred, although relevant work experience may substitute for the academic requirement.
- Three to five years of health care-related experience is preferred, including hospice care, bereavement counseling, other helping professions, or equivalent relevant training and experience.
- Two years of organ procurement organization experience is preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs is required.
- Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse credentials, or certification from the American Association of Tissue Banks, Eye Bank Association of America, or American Biotherapy and Biopharmaceutical Association, are accepted/preferred credentials as applicable.
- Ability to work empathetically, compassionately, and professionally with families in crisis.
- Strong interest in transplantation and organ procurement and a sincere desire to serve as a frontline team member.
- Ability to travel by personal automobile to fulfill the position's duties and responsibilities.
- Compliance with the organization's Motor Vehicle Driving Policy and driver-safety requirements is required.
Responsibilities
- Screen and evaluate potential donors.
- Respond to donor referral notifications by telephone within 20 minutes.
- Respond on-site to potential organ donors within 90 minutes unless approved otherwise by the Administrator on call.
- Collect clinical information to determine donor suitability in collaboration with the Administrator on call.
- Discuss organ, eye, and tissue donation options with potential donors' next of kin or families in accordance with hospital guidelines.
- Collaborate with hospital and organ procurement organization staff to determine the appropriate time to offer families the opportunity for donation.
- Assist donor families in accepting death as described by the primary care physician.
- Provide initial aftercare support and use community resources to assist grieving families.
- Provide referral-responder coverage for hospitals and backup coverage as needed.
- Participate in a flexible call schedule that may require extended day and night hours.
- Obtain authorization for donation from families and document accurate medical and social histories.
- Assist with Donation after Cardiac Death cases as assigned.
- Develop effective relationships with key hospital personnel to increase responsiveness to potential organ and tissue donation cases.
- Assist in coordinating the Donor Remembrance Ceremony.
- Collaborate with the Aftercare Coordinator and the aftercare process.
- Participate in hospital and public education programs as directed.
- Assist with chart review and data collection as needed.
- Assist with survey and accreditation maintenance.
- Assist in training and developing the Family Services department.
- Assist with community education and support through community service events.
- Meet or exceed performance metrics for the Family Services department.
- Collaborate and coordinate with other organ procurement organization departments.
- Perform other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in hospice care, bereavement counseling, another helping profession, or relevant equivalent training and experience.
- Two years of organ procurement organization experience.
- Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university.
- Certification from the American Association of Tissue Banks, Eye Bank Association of America, or American Biotherapy and Biopharmaceutical Association.
