About the company

BlackRock manages money for pension funds, governments, insurers, and everyday savers, and sells the software it uses to run those investments to other firms. In 2009, its purchase of Barclays Global Investors brought in the iShares fund family and made BlackRock the world's largest asset manager. Its iShares exchange-traded funds trade like stocks and mostly track market indexes, while its private funds lend to companies and invest in infrastructure and real estate. BlackRock charges a yearly fee on the money it manages, and banks, insurers, and other investors pay to use Aladdin, its system for measuring risk and running portfolios. Larry Fink and seven partners founded BlackRock in 1988, and it is based in New York City.

What believers are saying

  • Growth accelerated: clients added a record net $321 billion from January to June 2026, over double a year earlier.
  • Engineers are in demand: 97 of 315 open BlackRock jobs in October 2026 were in engineering or technology.
  • Private markets are the growth bet: BlackRock aims to raise $400 billion for private funds from 2025 through 2030.

What critics are saying

  • Its biggest rival took the US ETF lead: Vanguard passed BlackRock in June 2026, ending BlackRock's run since 2003.
  • Job cuts are routine: June 2026's roughly 200 layoffs were BlackRock's fourth round in 18 months.
  • Private lending is under strain: BlackRock's $26 billion HPS fund met about half of withdrawal requests in March 2026.

What makes BlackRock unique

  • Alternatives earn outsized fees: private and hedge funds were 3% of long-term assets but 17% of 2025 management fees.
  • Other investors pay to use its software: technology revenue, mostly from Aladdin, rose 24% to $2.0 billion in 2025.
  • Washington calls it in crises: BlackRock priced AIG's troubled assets in 2008 and ran Fed bond purchases in 2020.

BlackRock's Larry Fink warns a data centre moratorium could trigger a US recession

BlackRock chief executive officer Larry Fink warned on Wednesday that a moratorium on data centres would push the US into recession. He told CNBC that "a moratorium of some sort in this country" would hurt because much of the economy is tied to data centre investment. Fink called most fears about the buildout "misinformation" and said data centres "are not the problem." He said they create demand for construction workers, energy infrastructure, and AI computing hardware. A Pew Research Center survey found at least 49% of Americans say data centres are mostly bad for the environment, home energy costs, and quality of life nearby. McKinsey expects global data centre investment to reach almost $7 trillion by 2030, with more than 40% in the US. BlackRock reported third-quarter net income of $2.6 billion, beating expectations.

BlackRock's digital asset holdings surge 63% in Q3 but trail 2025 peak.

BlackRock's digital asset holdings surge 63% in Q3 but trail 2025 peak. BlackRock reported $79.6 billion in digital asset holdings at the end of September, up 63% from June, as rising crypto prices and renewed investor inflows reversed earlier outflows. Despite the rebound, assets remain 23% below year-ago levels. BlackRock's digital asset funds rebounded sharply in the third quarter, with holdings reaching $79.6 billion at the end of September, a 63% increase from $48.8 billion at the end of June, according to the asset manager's third-quarter earnings report released Wednesday. The recovery marked a reversal from the first half of 2026, when BlackRock's crypto funds faced $2.2 billion in net outflows. During Q3, investors added $7.9 billion to the funds as cryptocurrency markets recovered from earlier weakness. Rising asset prices drove most of the growth. Of the $30.8 billion increase in digital assets during the quarter, $22.9 billion came from market gains, while investor inflows contributed $7.9 billion. Despite the gains, BlackRock's crypto holdings remain well below their prior peak. Assets are 23% below the $104 billion the company managed a year ago. Over the past 12 months, BlackRock attracted $6.3 billion in net new investor money to its digital asset products, but market value declines erased $30.6 billion over the same period. BlackRock's digital asset business generated $39 million in quarterly fees and securities lending revenue. The company operates the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) but did not provide separate figures for the fund in its earnings release. * homepage * markets & trading * BlackRock's digital asset holdings surge 63% in Q3 but trail 2025 peak.
