Requirements
  • 4–8 years of experience in credit risk, fraud risk, or risk strategy roles, ideally in small and medium-sized enterprise lending.
  • An AI-native mindset, including daily use of artificial intelligence tools to build workflows, analyze data, and move faster.
  • Ability to own a policy question, an investigation, and a technical build in the same week and prioritize among them.
  • Strong SQL skills and the ability to independently analyze transaction, cash-flow, credit, fraud, and application data.
  • Hands-on experience configuring or building decisioning systems, risk workflow tools, or rules engines, or the technical ability to learn them quickly.
  • A collaborative approach and a proven track record of working well across teams and with external partners and vendors.
  • Written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to turn an ambiguous risk question into a clear written recommendation.
  • A practical and business-minded approach and enthusiasm for the rewards and volatility of an early-stage venture-backed startup.
  • New York City residency and availability to work in the office three to four days per week.
Responsibilities
  • Own credit and fraud risk strategy end-to-end.
  • Use internal credit performance, transaction, application, cash-flow, financial, and credit-bureau data to shape underwriting, line increase and decrease, account suspension, and other critical account policies.
  • Execute credit and fraud policies by conducting credit reviews, line increase and decrease decisions, and high-risk enablement reviews, then use the results to improve the system.
  • Build and maintain decisioning infrastructure that executes risk policy.
  • Configure underwriting logic, case-management and monitoring workflows, and vendor integrations for fraud, identity, and document verification.
  • Identify manual risk operations that can be automated, then design and implement the automation.
  • Lead fraud investigations across account takeover, identity theft, and first-party fraud.
  • Conduct root-cause analyses and deploy data-driven detection rules and defenses.
  • Build and maintain dashboards, monitoring alerts, and underlying data models while partnering with Data Engineering on the broader roadmap.
  • Partner with Product, Sales, Operations, Compliance, Legal, and Finance to lead credit and fraud initiatives.
  • Run root-cause analyses on fraud events, measure what current strategies caught versus slowed down, and recommend changes.
  • Defend risk metrics in risk review, obtain approval for changes, and update credit procedures to document them.
  • Deploy changes in the decisioning platform and build monitoring dashboards.
  • Work the risk queue, including high-risk cases past service-level agreements, velocity control reviews, transaction monitoring, and applications in group review; make case decisions when volume spikes.
  • Support Risk Operations by reviewing credit line increases or decreases, approving payment extensions, adjusting grace periods, activating high-risk categories, and handling other judgment-based decisions.
  • Track delinquency and charge-off by cohort and flag early when policy changes appear in 30-plus-days-past-due results.
  • Own the risk technology stack, including Alloy, Oscilar, Inscribe, Persona, Sentilink, Truebiz, and SBFE, and hold vendors accountable for hit rate and cost per decision.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with business-to-business fintech or commercial card products.
  • Experience underwriting small and medium-sized businesses.
  • Experience with risk decisioning or orchestration platforms such as Alloy or Oscilar, plus fraud and identity vendors.
  • Python skills or familiarity with modern data stacks such as Redshift, dbt, Hex, or Sigma.

Coast and Fleetio partner to embed fuel and fleet maintenance data in unified workflow

Coast, a spend management platform, and Fleetio, a fleet maintenance platform, have deepened their partnership with an embedded experience that brings fuel transaction data and payment management directly into Fleetio. The integration allows fleet managers to control spending and maintenance operations within a single workflow. The enhanced partnership enables Fleetio customers to apply for and manage Coast cards without leaving the platform. All Coast transactions automatically match to the correct vehicle, driver and cost centre, providing more accurate reporting on miles per gallon and total cost of ownership. Fleetio customers can also use Coast cards across the Fleetio Maintenance Shop Network with waived transaction fees. The integration eliminates the need for manual reconciliation between separate fleet operations and payment systems, giving managers real-time visibility into vehicle costs.

Vcs Think Rate Cuts Could Help Lending Fintechs

Are recent rate cuts good news for venture capitalist (VC) firms in the FinTech space?. A report Sunday (Sept. 29) by TechCrunch says the answer is yes, particularly for those FinTechs that depend on loans to keep cash flowing. Those FinTechs, the report said, include companies that provide fleet cards such as Ramp and Coast, earning money on transaction fees to merchants

Fintech Startup Coast Lands $40M Just 4 Months After Its Last $25M Raise

Coast, a startup that describes itself as “a financial services platform for the future of transportation,” has raised $40 million in Series B funding — just four months after announcing a $25 million round, the startup has told TechCrunch exclusively.Back-to-back fundraises were common prior to and during the wild investment days of 2021, but have been much more rare since the VC market downturn in 2022. That makes Coast’s latest haul notable.New York-based Coast compares itself to the likes of Ramp and Brex in that it has developed expense management software for fleet operators and their employees. To that end, and like the aforementioned spend management companies, Coast has created a commercial charge card designed for the businesses that operate vehicle fleets — and that niche focus has served the company well. While Coast declined to divulge hard revenue figures, CEO and founder Daniel Simon told TechCrunch that the startup grew about “10x” in both annualized revenue and payment volume in the last 18 months. (We’ll just offer the obvious caveat that a fast rate of growth could indicate a small initial base.)Coast counts “thousands of businesses” as customers that operate fleets in service industries such as HVAC, plumbing, landscaping and pest control; construction; government fleets; and long-haul trucking — some with just a handful of fleet cards, and others with more than 1,000, the company says. To date, it has issued over 100,000 cards.Image Credits: CoastICONIQ Growth led Coast’s Series B round, which also included participation from existing backers Accel, Insight Partners, Vesey Ventures and Avid Ventures, as well as new investor Thomvest
