Requirements
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or an equivalent certifying organization is required.
  • Completion of a two-year Medical Laboratory Technician program is required.
  • The laboratory professional must demonstrate ethical and moral attitudes and a commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Computer program experience is required to function in the position.
  • At least one year of relevant medical practice experience is required.
  • A current and valid Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Annual purified protein derivative testing is required.
  • COVID-19 vaccination or a religious or medical exemption is required to work in a Veterans Affairs facility.
Responsibilities
  • Perform in-house laboratory procedures on appropriate specimens to provide information for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases within the scope of the clinic.
  • Recognize and respond to critical values related to patient tests, results, controls, and proficiency samples.
  • Ensure specimens are properly collected and labeled.
  • Enter laboratory requests and results into the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture and Computerized Patient Record System.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment according to manufacturers’ recommendations and clinic policies and procedures.
  • Run and document quality controls according to manufacturer and system guidelines.
  • Comply with performance measures and clinical guidelines in the current Veterans Health Administration Performance Measures Technical Manual and with requirements specified by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center issuing the contract.
  • Comply with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Universal Precautions for preventing the transmission of HIV and other communicable diseases.
  • Fulfill compliance requirements of the Office of Inspector General, Joint Commission, Environment of Care oversight, laboratory compliance, and related programs.
  • Maintain contaminated materials and trash in proper containers, including red bags.
  • Follow specified Veterans Affairs guidelines to support excellent clinical outcomes.
  • Provide customer service to veterans, colleagues, and clinic visitors in person and by telephone.
  • Establish and maintain a warm, welcoming, and professional atmosphere for colleagues and veterans while consistently meeting their needs and expectations.
  • Collaborate with clinic leadership to resolve veteran concerns or complaints.
  • Ensure clinical areas are clean, stocked, and comfortable.
  • Monitor coffee service to ensure availability for patients and guests.
  • Participate in clinic outreach events to support enrollment initiatives.
  • Support patient enrollment and retention in appointments, follow-up visits, and nurse visits.
  • Support new clinical and operational initiatives.
  • Provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to patients with diseases and injuries under the direction of a physician or mid-level provider.
  • Collaborate with the core Primary Care Aligned Care Team and expanded care team in developing patient care plans.
