Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Verify specimen identification against physicians’ orders, prepare specimens for testing, and handle specimens safely.
  • Analyze test results and interpret abnormal or unusual results.
  • Research and prepare pertinent patient data and refer data and testing results to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and verify instruments and equipment.
  • Order supplies and maintain inventory of forms, disposable supplies, materials, and reagents.
  • Recognize test inconsistencies, identify problems affecting test performance, determine error causes, and take corrective action.
  • Perform quality-control testing, maintain data records, and participate in proficiency testing, instrument correlation, method comparison, and validation studies.
  • Perform high-complexity tests in the molecular, histocompatibility, immunology, core, serology, hematology, and microbiology areas according to approved standard operating procedures.
  • Perform infectious disease testing by polymerase chain reaction using Ingenious/Elitech, Roche/Cobas Ampliprep, and 7500 real-time polymerase chain reaction instruments.
  • Perform HLA typing using sequence-specific primer and sequence-specific oligo-probe techniques, including QuantStudio and Luminex platforms.
  • Perform high-resolution HLA typing, APOL1, and gene rearrangement assays using next-generation sequencing.
  • Perform red blood cell typing, flow cytometry immunophenotyping and cell activation panels, lymphocyte crossmatch, and complement-dependent cytotoxicity assays.
  • Perform solid-phase HLA antibody detection and identification, complement-fixing antibody testing, and human cytokine quantification using Luminex panels.
  • Perform manual and automated enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay testing for infectious disease antibody and antigen detection or quantification.
  • Use specific test-analysis software for raw-data analysis and assign results accordingly.
  • Report results in the current laboratory system and UNET, when applicable.
  • Meet turnaround-time requirements and deadlines for assigned tests, projects, and assignments.
  • Report critical values to requestors according to current policy, when applicable.
  • Perform on-call duties in the assigned area or rotation and respond promptly to call-back situations.
  • Refer pertinent patient data and test results to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.
  • Assume lead duties and act as a resource to staff.
  • Orient and train employees on laboratory techniques and operations.
  • Obtain 12 continuing-education credits annually in the histocompatibility area, in addition to credits required by the State of Florida.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certified Histocompatibility Technologist or Specialist certification.
