Carrefour to launch in Addis within two weeks. October 18, 2026 French retail giant Carrefour is set to begin operations in select Addis Ababa locations within two weeks, as the rebranding of Queens Supermarket branches progresses rapidly, Capital has learned. Newspaper subscription This launch follows a franchise and supply agreement signed in January this year between Carrefour and Queens Supermarket, which is part of MIDROC Investment Group. Sources close to the issue told Capital that 15 Queens Supermarket branches in Addis Ababa, Adama, Dessie, and other cities are currently being converted to the Carrefour brand. Capital observed during visits to some Queens Supermarket branches that entrances, exits, and other interior and exterior areas were being renovated to reflect Carrefour's branding. Additionally, three new Carrefour supermarkets are under construction in Addis Ababa, with planned locations at Piazza Arada Mall, Millennium Hall in Bole, and Mohammedia Village in Sarbet. MIDROC also intends to expand its Carrefour network to 31 supermarkets by the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP32. Currently, MIDROC is hosting "MIDROC Week" at Meskel Square, a week-long exhibition where it has announced the availability of Carrefour products to consumers. "Carrefour products are now available at MIDROC Week at Meskel Square! Visit us, explore our wide range of products and enjoy a whole new unique shopping experience," the company posted on social media. Cyberattack on European supermarkets causes refrigerators to reach 50 degrees. Massive cyberattack disrupts refrigeration in major European supermarkets. Leading supermarket chains such as Carrefour, Monoprix, Intermarché, and Coopérative U fell victim to sophisticated cyberattacks targeting their refrigeration systems. These attacks caused hundreds of stores to experience temperature spikes, with some freezers and refrigerators reaching up to 50°C overnight. The rapid rise in temperature threatens the integrity of perishable goods, risking extensive food spoilage and safety concerns. How cybercriminals are targeting food retail infrastructure. Cybercriminals access critical infrastructure by exploiting vulnerabilities in IoT-connected refrigeration units and control systems. They often deploy ransomware or wiper malware that encrypts or damages the operational software. As a result, store managers lose control over temperature regulation, leading to equipment failure and potential food waste. The attack vectors include phishing schemes, compromised vendor access, and direct network breaches. Impact beyond france: European countries affected. * Spain * Portugal * Poland * Germany * Belgium The cyberattack group's reach extends across Europe, affecting multiple nations simultaneously. Security firms report a surge in similar incidents, highlighting the demand for heightened cybersecurity measures in retail logistics. The coordinated nature of these assaults suggests a well-resourced threat actor aiming to destabilize the supply chain, possibly as part of a larger extortion scheme or geopolitical hacking effort. Why food supply and safety are at risk. When refrigeration systems go offline, perishable foods such as dairy, meats, and fresh produce become vulnerable to bacterial growth and spoilage. In extreme cases, the failure can trigger fires or explosions due to electrical overloads or short circuits caused by malware. Store owners often lose access to real-time temperature control, making rapid response vital to prevent widespread food loss. Ship by Rail Protecting hospitality and retail sectors from similar attacks. To defend against such threats, retailers must implement multi-layered cybersecurity strategies: * Regular System Updates: Keep all control and IoT devices patched against known vulnerabilities. * Network Segmentation: Isolate refrigeration and control networks from corporate and internet-facing systems. * Enhanced Monitoring: Use advanced threat detection tools to identify unusual activity early. * Staff Training: Educate employees about phishing tactics and secure handling practices. * Incident Response Planning: Develop clear protocols to shut down affected systems and communicate quickly with authorities. The need for regulatory and industry response. The widespread nature of these attacks signals an urgent call to action for industry regulators and cybersecurity agencies. Implementing strict standards for IoT device security, requiring regular vulnerability assessments, and establishing cross-border information sharing platforms can mitigate future risks. Additionally, investing in resilient backup systems and ensuring data recovery methodologies remain operational during crises will bolster food safety and supply chain integrity. French supermarkets ransomware: refrigeration systems targeted, food spoiled (October 2026). Intermarché, Netto, Coopérative U, Carrefour, E.Leclerc, Monoprix: what happened. Between October 11 and 12, 2026, a coordinated ransomware attack targeted the refrigeration-control systems of several major French supermarket chains, including Intermarché, Netto, Coopérative U, Carrefour, E.Leclerc, and Monoprix. The attackers specifically compromised Danfoss refrigeration-management systems deployed across hundreds of stores. As a result, defrost cycles were manipulated, causing widespread spoilage of refrigerated and frozen food, damage to refrigeration equipment, and in some cases, fires. The incident led to significant operational disruptions, with some stores or departments forced to close temporarily. Attack vector & technical detail. The attackers gained unauthorized access to Danfoss refrigeration-management systems, likely exploiting weaknesses in remote access protocols or insufficient network segmentation. While no specific CVEs or IOCs were provided in the incident report, the attack demonstrated tactics consistent with MITRE ATT&CK techniques TA0001 (Initial Access), TA0005 (Defense Evasion), and TA0040 (Impact). The adversaries bypassed existing controls to manipulate critical infrastructure, extending defrost cycles and causing system malfunctions. The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation, indicating the severity and complexity of the intrusion. Confirmed impact. The ransomware attack resulted in several million euros in financial losses due to spoiled food and damaged refrigeration equipment. Fires were reported in some locations, compounding the physical and operational impact. Temporary closures of affected stores or departments disrupted stock availability and supply chains across France. The incident has regulatory implications, as food safety and waste became immediate concerns, and law enforcement is actively investigating the breach. What this means for your organization. This incident underscores the risk of ransomware targeting operational technology (OT) and IoT systems, especially those controlling critical infrastructure like refrigeration. Organizations should review network segmentation policies, restrict remote access to OT devices, and ensure that all control systems are regularly updated and monitored for anomalous activity. Proactive defense and incident response planning are essential to mitigate the risk of cascading operational and financial impacts from similar attacks. Detection & response. * Immediate: Isolate affected refrigeration-control systems from the network and initiate incident response protocols. * Hunt: Monitor for unauthorized access attempts or abnormal changes in control system configurations, especially targeting Danfoss management interfaces. * Patch: N/A (no specific CVE identified in this incident).
