Requirements
  • The candidate must qualify through one of the listed education, early childhood experience, and approved child development or early childhood training pathways and be registered through the Hawaii Early Childhood Registry.
  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting is required.
  • The candidate must be able to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations and the ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds are required.
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act is required.
  • The candidate must fulfill state-specific hiring standards and complete YMCA program-specific training.
  • Daily access to a personal vehicle is required.
  • Child Abuse Prevention training is required before the first shift.
  • The candidate must successfully complete comprehensive background screening, including criminal and sex offender checks.
Responsibilities
  • Plan and lead age- and developmentally appropriate early learning experiences in a classroom setting for children ages 2 to under 6 years old.
  • Supervise the children, classroom, and all program activities.
  • Follow procedures and standards established by law or the YMCA, make Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations where appropriate, and maintain the program site, equipment, and required program records.
  • Nurture children through purposeful programming and create lesson plans intended to achieve program goals and outcomes.
  • Create positive rapport and shared interests with all youth.
  • Provide opportunities for youth to lead, problem-solve, and make decisions and choices within the program, and provide daily opportunities for youth to reflect on and respond to their experiences.
  • Conduct ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Maintain ongoing dialogue with parents and caregivers about their child’s needs and progress, conduct parent and caregiver conferences, and connect families to the YMCA.
  • Prepare snacks and meals.
  • Collaborate with aides and other teachers on lesson planning and activities.
  • Lead circle-time and large-group activities as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator certifications are preferred; training is provided.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification is preferred.
