Valley College, ARH sign partnership to boost health care workforce.

Valley College, ARH sign partnership to boost health care workforce. September 9, 2026 7:25 pm Beckley, WV (WOAY) - Valley College and Appalachian Regional Healthcare signed a new partnership in Beckley on Wednesday, one aimed at keeping the state's health care system running strong. West Virginia news The deal pairs the college with one of the region's largest health care employers. Valley College Campus Director Jamie Holiday said the goal is to help ARH employees continue their education. "We are partnering with Appalachian Regional Health Care to provide their employees with scholarships for all of our programs," Holiday said. The scholarships range from $3,000 toward a diploma to $6,000 for an associate's degree and $12,000 for a bachelor's. The money can go toward fields such as nursing and medical training, business, and information technology. Beckley ARH CEO Todd Howell said investing where there is growth is common sense. "Health care is definitely a growing field... in the state we're actually one of the few professions that is growing," Howell said. "So there's a lot of opportunity in health care. We have an aging population. And so there's opportunities for, you know, nurses, for CNAs, for therapists, for pharmacists. All those are in big demand in West Virginia." The benefits are not limited to ARH's workforce. Holiday said Valley students gain from the partnership as well. "They'll have more opportunity since we are a partner with ARH for any type of externships with them or jobs with them, and we'll be able to just network together," she said. Howell said the partnership also helps grow the quality of health care and health care education close to home. "They don't want to drive to Charleston or drive to another place to get an education or get health care," he said. "So I think it's important that we find providers that we can partner with who can deliver the services here in town so that people don't have to drive to get those services." Gracie Ferrell is one of the students currently working toward a nursing degree at Valley College, and she recognizes the value of what she is working toward. "It's a difficult 18 months, but it's a lifetime career," Ferrell said. "I hope to be successful, help people, and make money."

Joey Preast of Beckley and Summers County ARH named CEO for Advanced Care. Posted: Sep 7, 2026 / 04:43 PM EDT Updated: Sep 7, 2026 / 04:43 PM EDT BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) - Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) has a new CEO for Advanced Care. According to a post of the Summers County ARH Hospital Facebook page, Joey Preast was named CEO of ARH Advanced Care, and will oversee operations of long-term acute care hospitals (LTACH) in South Williamson and Hazard, Ky. His most recent position was serving as the COO of Beckley ARH Hospital and interim administrator of Tug Valley Regional Medical Center's skilled nursing facility, the post stated. Before that position, he served as the CEO of Summers County ARH Hospital and an administrator in Beckley. ARH President and CEO Hollie Harris, who also served in the position of Chair of the SRH Advanced Care Board of Directors, expressed that his experience with ARH, as well as the experience he had as a nursing home administrator before joining the team, made him a great person for the role, the post stated. During his time at both Beckley at Summers ARH, Joey proved himself to be an exceptional leader. He helped guide both facilities through periods of generational growth, while ensuring our patients receive the highest level of care. That experience, coupled with his long-term care background, will be a tremendous asset as he leads ARH Advanced Care into the future. * Hollie Harris | CEO and President, ARH The LTACHs allow ARH patients who need highly specialized care for more than 25 days a chance to stay closer to home rather than journeying farther to bigger cities, as stated on their website. It's so important that patients in our areas have the chance to recover close to home where their families and friends can visit and provide them the support they need. Our LTACH's are a much-needed service and I'm excited and honored to have the opportunity to help advance patient care and serve the ARH mission, which is to improve the health and well-being of the people of central Appalachia. * Joey Preast | CEO of Advanced Care, ARH
