About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Six to eight or more years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on month-end close across multiple general ledger areas; payroll accounting, accounts payable, and expense classification between cost of goods sold and selling, general, and administrative expenses; at least two years directly managing or supervising accounting staff; and reviewing others' work and providing constructive feedback.
  • Experience capitalizing internally developed software.
  • Experience with NetSuite or a similar enterprise resource planning system.
  • Proficiency in Excel, including pivot tables and VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP.
  • Experience in high-volume, multi-entity, or multi-processor environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple close deadlines and direct reports simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, coach staff, and work cross-functionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to bring structure and process discipline to evolving or ambiguous areas of ownership.
Responsibilities
  • Directly manage and develop two Senior GL Accountants and the AP Specialist, including workload prioritization, coaching, and performance management.
  • Provide second-level review and sign-off on work performed by GL Accountants reporting to Senior GL Accountants, ensuring consistency and quality across the team.
  • Set daily and monthly team priorities in line with the month-end close calendar established with the Assistant Controller and Controller.
  • Identify staffing, training, and process gaps within the team and recommend solutions to the Assistant Controller.
  • Hold the team accountable for timely, accurate, well-documented deliverables, and proactively escalate risks or resourcing constraints.
  • Own execution of payroll-related journal entries, including regular payroll, subsidiary expense allocations, fringe benefits, and management fee allocations.
  • Partner with People/HR and Payroll on general ledger mapping, coding of new departments and entities, and resolution of payroll data discrepancies.
  • Reconcile payroll-related balance sheet accounts, including accrued payroll, payroll clearing, and benefits, monthly.
  • Maintain and improve payroll accounting standard operating procedures, including CSV upload templates for payroll, accruals, and subsidiary expense allocations.
  • Oversee accounts payable coding accuracy across vendors, departments, and entities, including review of the AP Specialist's day-to-day coding.
  • Provide guidance and approver training to support consistent and correct vendor coding at point of entry.
  • Oversee payout-related accounts payable activity with Senior GL Accountants, including bill creation, payout returns, and related accounts payable reconciliations.
  • Review and approve accounts payable aging prepared by the Senior GL Accountant, ensure it ties to the trial balance, and resolve long-outstanding items.
  • Perform monthly period-over-period and, as applicable, budget-to-actual flux analysis for team-owned accounts, including payroll, accounts-payable-driven expense accounts, and cost of goods sold and selling, general, and administrative lines.
  • Investigate and document explanations for significant fluctuations, distinguishing business drivers from coding or classification issues.
  • Review cost of goods sold versus selling, general, and administrative classification across the chart of accounts to ensure new vendors, expense types, and cost-sharing arrangements are mapped and coded appropriately.
  • Summarize flux commentary for the Assistant Controller and Controller before monthly and quarterly reporting deadlines.
  • Prepare and maintain monthly equity rollforward schedules for Topstep LLC and applicable subsidiaries, recording contributions, distributions, in-kind transfers, and net income allocations.
  • Ensure equity rollforwards tie to the trial balance each month and are supported by underlying agreements, board or member approvals, and intercompany documentation.
  • Partner with Legal, Tax, and outside advisors on the treatment of in-kind contributions, intercompany transfers, and entity restructurings affecting equity.
  • Provide quarterly summaries of equity activity to the Assistant Controller and Controller for review.
  • Review and approve balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules prepared by Senior GL Accountants before Assistant Controller review. This may include bank transaction coding and uploading, cash reconciliations, prepaid expenses, fixed assets including capitalized software, leases, accrued expenses, accounts payable, expense reports and corporate credit cards, payout expenses and returns, and intercompany clearing.
  • Ensure each account owned by the team has an identified preparer and reviewer, a documented process, and audit-ready support.
  • Resolve or escalate aged and complex reconciling items surfaced by the team.
  • Prepare and/or review audit schedules and support requests related to owned general ledger areas, as requested by the Assistant Controller and Controller.
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation standards across the team's owned areas.
  • Adhere to internal controls and company accounting policies, and identify and flag control gaps to management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and consistency across owned close areas and the broader team's workflow.
  • Use NetSuite and related tools, including CSV import templates and reconciliation tools, and support system improvements as directed by the Assistant Controller and Controller.
  • Partner with People/HR, FP&A, Treasury, and Product/Engineering to ensure payroll, accounts payable, and other data flows accurately into the general ledger.
  • Take on ad hoc projects or other duties assigned by the Assistant Controller or Controller, and flex responsibilities as business needs and the finance team's structure evolve.
Desired Qualifications
  • CPA or active pursuit of CPA.

About the company

Topstep connects aspiring retail futures traders with a funded trading path. It provides a simulated trading environment, coaching, and objective evaluation tools that let traders practice, learn risk management, and build the discipline needed for professional trading. Traders complete a performance-based evaluation in a simulated account, meeting defined profit targets and risk limits to qualify for a funded live account. This makes funding contingent on demonstrable skill and consistency rather than just capital. Topstep distinguishes itself by offering a clear, rules-based path to funding, coaching resources, and a structured environment designed to cultivate professional habits. The company’s goal is to help people safely learn, improve, and eventually trade with company-provided capital in real markets.
