Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • Completion of a formal Dental Assistant program at a college, technical institute, or equivalent is required.
  • At least 6 months of work experience is required; employees without formal training must have at least 18 months of Dental Assistant experience.
  • All Dental Assistants must maintain registration with the Washington State Department of Health.
  • Basic Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • Annual tuberculosis testing and current Washington State dental registration are required.
  • Employees must pass the Dental Assistant II Competency Test and Practical with a score of at least 80% when applicable.
  • Candidates must communicate, read, and write in English.
  • Candidates must read and interpret common written materials about dentistry.
  • Candidates must communicate effectively with patients and staff verbally and in writing.
  • Candidates must perform basic mathematical calculations involving discounts, proportions, and percentages.
  • Candidates must define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Employees must follow infection-control procedures to prevent exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Pre-hire and annual employee health screening is required.
  • Annual influenza vaccination is required unless an approved medical or religious exemption applies.
  • Employees must sign a permanent confidentiality oath covering patient-related information.
  • Employees must complete a Washington State Patrol background check.
  • Candidates must be able to perform the physical demands of dental assisting, including sitting, standing, walking, using their hands and fingers, reaching, talking, hearing, and occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Candidates must be able to lift or move a child or object weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Candidates must have close, distant, color, peripheral, and depth vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Responsibilities
  • Provide chairside assistance to dental providers using four-handed dentistry for diagnostic, preventive, restorative, endodontic, periodontal, oral surgery, prosthodontic, orthodontic, and other services permitted by the Washington Dental Practice Act.
  • Identify and categorize patient needs by age group, including infants, adolescents, and geriatric patients.
  • Escort patients to and from treatment rooms, greet and seat them, and facilitate their departure while maintaining courtesy, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Communicate provider and patient-flow delays to front-desk staff and patients.
  • Provide patients with education and instructions before, during, and after dental procedures.
  • Schedule appointments and register patients in Dentrix and Allscripts Practice Management.
  • Complete accurate charting in Dentrix using the SOAP or PARTS format.
  • Obtain accurate blood-pressure readings and other vital signs as directed by the dental provider.
  • Maintain sterilization procedures and Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations in treatment and sterilization areas.
  • Assist with inventory and ordering dental supplies.
  • Perform duties listed in the Dental Department Task and Duty List and duties assigned by the supervisor or Regional Dental Manager.
  • Participate in Dental Department and Sea Mar Community Health Centers quality-improvement activities.
  • Provide treatment plans and cost estimates, sequence treatments, complete insurance pre-authorizations, and verify patient eligibility and benefits as directed.
  • Maintain records for Material Safety Data Sheets, spore tests, dental-supply inventory and ordering, equipment maintenance, inventory lists, nitrous oxide and oxygen cylinders, and Emergency Kit Logs at standalone dental sites.
  • Assist with coordinating training for new employees and dental trainees.
  • Perform specific clinical or administrative duties assigned and approved by dental or clinic management.
  • Work temporarily in other departments or dental sites when assigned.
  • Comply with confidentiality, background-check, vaccination, and health-screening conditions of employment.
