Ostrom in Berlin delivers 100% green electricity to German households through a subscription that charges a flat monthly fee and provides electricity at market cost. The service includes two tariffs—SimplyFair for predictable bills and SimplyDynamic with hourly, real-time pricing using smart meters—accessible via a mobile app that shows consumption and lets customers adjust tariffs in real time. Ostrom differentiates itself by aligning its incentives with customers’ energy use, promoting demand-side flexibility, and building Germany’s largest Virtual Power Plant to coordinate decentralized assets like EVs for grid stability. Its goal is to lower energy costs for customers, accelerate smart-meter rollout, and scale a VPP to enable a cleaner, more flexible energy system.

  • Ostrom tripled its customer base in 2024 and launched Germany’s largest EV VPP.
  • Government-backed smart-meter reform in 2026 expands demand for Ostrom’s installation subsidies and automation.

What critics are saying

  • Germany’s smart-meter rollout remains slow; BNetzA opened 77 enforcement cases in March 2026.
  • Rivals Octopus Energy, Tibber, and Rabot Energy crowd the same dynamic-tariff niche.
  • If smart-meter adoption stalls, Ostrom’s VPP and hourly pricing model lose core economics.

What makes Ostrom unique

  • Ostrom bundles green power, dynamic tariffs, and app control for German households.
  • NeoGrid VPP ties EVs and batteries into grid-balancing demand-side flexibility.
  • Ostrom targets monthly cancellable English-language service, winning expats and digitally native customers.
