Quality Assurance Manager - Food Manufacturing

The Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for leading and implementing the quality assurance, food safety, and sanitation programs at a specific facility. This includes working with customers, suppliers, corporate personnel, and manufacturing staff. Their responsibilities include auditing of Quality and Food Safety systems such as, SQF (Safe Quality Foods), the Food Safety Plan, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), and SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures). They are responsible for communicating food quality standards to plant personnel through training, corrective actions, quality audits, production, and facility monitoring.
- Manage the Quality and Food Safety function at the facility.
- Serve as SQF Practitioner and site Preventive Controls Qualified Individual.
- Serve as a Plant Leadership Team member.
- Manage programs to verify, validate the Food Safety Prerequisite programs.
- Manage the plant Food Safety Plan and associated policies and procedures.
- Serve as Food Safety Team Member.
- Monitor, support and enforce all Shearer’s Foods food safety processes and procedures. This includes all AIB standards, SQF standards, Regulatory standards and customer specific standards as identified in supporting documentation.
- Ensure weekly Food Safety Inspections are performed and corrective actions are implemented.
- Ensure all quality procedures and processes are followed according to documented policies.
- Ensure that all GMP and Safety standards are complying with regulatory and Shearer’s polices.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of all products manufactured by the plant as well as the raw materials, packaging materials, and operations required in the manufacturing process including quality specifications and standards.
- Formulate and maintain quality objectives; align and coordinate objectives with Production and Corporate objectives in cooperation with the Plant Manager and other managers/supervisors to maximize food safety, product quality and minimize costs.
- Coach QA team to become technical resources for facilitating issue resolution on the production floor. Develop technicians and supervisors in auditing of production processes.
- Design and implement quality assurance training programs for plant personnel.
- Investigate and respond to customer complaints. Track complaints and react to emerging issues or trends and engage the appropriate functions and process owners (i.e., production, maintenance, PD, etc.) to resolve.
- Develop and analyze statistical quality data for specification compliance, continuous improvement, and troubleshooting.
- Lead the Plant Food Safety Crisis Team and be the plant liaison for regulatory inspections; ensure traceability exercises are completed on time and meets reconciliation goals.
- Respond to customer requests and queries.
- Provide technical support to operations, sanitation, and pest control.
What you bring to the table
- Minimum requirement of a bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Animal Science, Microbiology, Biology, or other science related degree.
- Minimum of 5 years of overall professional experience in Quality Assurance, Food Safety, and Sanitation.
- Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory or management position in a plant of similar complexity and size.
- Leader of Change and Strategic Thinking.
- Broad knowledge and experience in quality and food safety management gained at successive levels of responsibility in a plant atmosphere.
- Certifications required include Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI), SQF Practitioner or other GFSI standard, and HACCP.
- Knowledge of FDA standards and FSMA Regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to direct, coach, and train associates as well as plan, monitor and schedule work.
- Lead and able to demonstrate “Best in Class” behaviors with focus on food safety, quality assurance, and plant regulatory compliance.
- Experience working directly with customers and suppliers.
- Demonstrated ability in using statistical process control for quality monitoring, improvement, and problem-solving.
