Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering or science with at least 6 years of related experience, a master's degree in a similar discipline with at least 4 years of related experience, or a PhD in a similar discipline with at least 2 years of related experience.
  • Understanding and broad application of developing, qualifying, and approving procedures; establishing and approving techniques; interpreting codes, standards, specifications, and procedures; and designating the NDT methods, techniques, and procedures to be used.
  • Experience leading NDT operations and qualified personnel, with the ability to interpret and evaluate results according to existing codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Practical background in applicable NDT materials, pressure system fabrication, pressure system service, and product technology to establish techniques and help establish acceptance criteria when none are available.
  • General familiarity with other appropriate NDT methods, demonstrated by an ASNT Level III Basic examination or other means.
  • Technical knowledge and skills sufficient to train and examine NDT Level I, II, and III personnel for certification.
  • Ability to interact with peers, functional partners, and customers external to JPL.
  • Ability to follow required policies, procedures, and practices under ASNT NDE Level III certification for Visual Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Liquid Penetrant Testing, and Ultrasonic Testing.
  • American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector certification.
  • Ability to work on assignments without appreciable direction, exercising latitude in determining objectives and independent judgment in evaluating complex and unusual problems.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to report project status and advise or consult with management on technical issues.
  • Willingness to work overtime and travel as required.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate projects within JPL organizations, NASA, other agencies, and external organizations on ground-based pressure safety issues.
  • Provide input on the interpretation, application, and execution of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and API standards for in-service inspections.
  • Train, examine, certify, and monitor nondestructive testing personnel to ensure compliance with company, contractual, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical oversight of NDT programs, approve procedures and workmanship standards, and ensure the integrity and effectiveness of inspection operations.
  • Take responsibility for direct reports' qualifications and certifications related to the NDT program.
  • Interface with management and JPL project stakeholders, as well as internal and external organizations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience and advanced knowledge in engineering and fabrication of pressure vessels, welding requirements, and general pipeline and pressure vessel safety.
  • Radiographic Testing Level II certification.
  • Skill in ultrasonic shear-wave and phased-array testing for detecting and sizing flaws in welds and engineered materials.
  • Experience performing or participating in pressure system and/or NDT audits.

Loft Orbital to deploy NASA JPL's AI software for real-time Earth disaster monitoring

Loft Orbital has secured an agreement with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to host and demonstrate AI software on its space infrastructure. The collaboration, part of JPL's Federated Autonomous MEasurement project funded by NASA's Earth Science Technology Office, will advance on-orbit AI capabilities for Earth science remote sensing. Flight demonstrations began in June 2026, with additional deployments scheduled through 2028. JPL's AI software aims to reduce data latency by processing information in near-real time, delivering urgent insights on wildfires, flooding and natural disasters to emergency responders. The spacecraft will demonstrate autonomous tip-and-queue tasking without ground intervention using intersatellite links. Founded in 2017, Loft Orbital has flown over 25 missions and operates facilities in San Francisco, Colorado and Toulouse, France.
