Medical Coding Team Lead
About the job
- Several years of medical coding experience, typically 3–5 or more years, often including supervisory or lead experience.
- CPC, CCS, RHIT, or equivalent AAPC/AHIMA certification.
- Deep understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), and regulatory guidelines including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, written and verbal communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Manage a team of medical coders and ensure accurate, compliant coding of medical records.
- Assign workloads, monitor productivity, conduct performance reviews, and provide coaching and support.
- Perform audits and review coding for accuracy, including ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers.
- Ensure compliance with applicable coding guidelines and regulations.
- Onboard new hires, develop training materials, and provide ongoing education to the team.
- Serve as the escalation point for complex coding questions and discrepancies.
- Collaborate with providers, billing, compliance, and other departments to resolve documentation issues and improve accuracy.
- Identify trends in denials or errors and implement process improvements.
- Stay current with coding changes.
- Track and report team key performance indicators, quality metrics, and productivity.
- Act as a liaison for complex coding issues and manage coding workflow to support revenue-cycle quality and efficiency.
