  • Must be credentialed as a Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak and comprehend English.

  • Must be able to meet time pressure and timelines and perform work in an exact and accurate manner.

  • Must be able to tolerate possible exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals, hazardous materials, and cleaning solutions while using common protective and safety equipment.
  • Must be able to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking and be able to reach, stand, walk, kneel, bend, sit, stoop, lift, and run in an emergency.
  • Must be able to move fingers in a coordinated manner and perceive temperature, texture, shape, and size with the fingertips.
  • Must be able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation; hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
  • Must possess the stamina to work a prolonged shift.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential.
Responsibilities
  • Begin the next day's dialysis schedule and enter it into the computer after completion by the Charge Nurse.
  • Disinfect hemodialysis machines and water systems according to AAMI and unit standards at routine and as-needed schedules.
  • Collect and monitor environmental cultures and take appropriate action as needed.
  • Maintain functional knowledge of water systems.
  • Inventory, order, and store unit supplies, monitor expiration dates, and rotate stock so the closest expiration date is used first.
  • Clean, check, and store unit equipment.
  • Start each day with water system checks according to policy and procedure, set up dialysis machines, and prime tubing while maintaining sterile technique.
  • Perform water system chlorine checks every four hours.
  • Disassemble disposables and clean and disinfect hemodialysis machines.
  • Initiate maintenance requests for repairs as indicated.
  • Clean and stock the treatment area and keep supply and water rooms clean and organized.
  • Answer the telephone, relay messages accurately, and send and receive faxes.
  • Maintain accurate supply, equipment, cleaning, and disinfection records.
  • Cross-train to function as a Medical/Surgical Unit Secretary and Patient Care Assistant and work in those roles during times of low census.
  • Enter patient data in the dialysis computer system.
  • Assist with orientation of new staff regarding disinfection processes, secretarial functions, and water system maintenance.
  • Attend required meetings, in-service programs, competencies, and computer-based trainings.
  • Assist with the care and monitoring of patients receiving hemodialysis treatments under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Provide direct care interventions including feeding, bathing, elimination, repositioning, comfort measures, measuring vital signs, transfers to and from bed, weighing, and changing linen.
  • Run errands necessary for patient care and unit functions.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Adhere to DCH Health System policies and procedures and its mission, vision, and values.
  • Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices and recognize and address risks and hazards.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
