About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline; an ABET-accredited engineering degree is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience in commercial building energy engineering, building energy modeling, energy-efficient building design, utility energy efficiency programs, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing whole-building energy models for commercial new construction and/or major renovation projects.
  • Advanced proficiency with at least one major building energy modeling platform such as EnergyPlus/OpenStudio, IES VE, eQUEST, Trane TRACE 3D Plus, or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC, central plants, heat pumps, controls, building envelope, lighting, domestic hot water, ventilation, and other major building energy systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, and construction drawings and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of ASHRAE Standard 90.1, including Appendix G, IECC, and applicable commercial building energy codes and performance methodologies.
  • Ability to quantify energy consumption and savings, peak demand, utility cost savings, incremental costs, payback, and other economic metrics associated with energy efficiency measures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with owners and design teams to identify technically feasible improvements, evaluate alternatives, explain modeling results, and support informed design decisions.
Responsibilities
  • Develop accurate whole-building energy models for commercial new construction and major renovation projects using architectural and engineering design documents and appropriate modeling methodologies.
  • Identify and evaluate energy efficiency opportunities during design and preconstruction, when recommendations can be incorporated into the final building design.
  • Quantify annual energy savings, peak demand reductions, utility cost savings, incremental costs, payback, and other economic impacts associated with proposed efficiency improvements.
  • Establish appropriate baseline and proposed building conditions in accordance with applicable energy codes, standards, utility program requirements, and modeling protocols.
  • Work consultatively with owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and program teams to evaluate alternatives and support adoption of cost-effective efficiency recommendations.
  • Ensure models, assumptions, calculations, documentation, and recommendations are technically sound, transparent, reproducible, and consistent with program requirements.
  • Support utility and government-sponsored new construction programs in achieving energy savings, demand reduction, decarbonization, and customer participation objectives.
  • Build and maintain detailed energy models for commercial new construction and major renovation projects using EnergyPlus/OpenStudio, IES VE, eQUEST, Trane TRACE 3D Plus, or comparable tools.
  • Read and interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, and envelope drawings, specifications, schedules, narratives, and other design documentation at multiple stages of design.
  • Develop appropriate baseline and proposed models using applicable energy codes, ASHRAE standards, utility program rules, and project-specific requirements.
  • Evaluate HVAC systems, central plants, heat pumps, heat recovery, controls, building envelope, lighting and lighting controls, domestic hot water, ventilation, plug/process loads, and other building systems for efficiency opportunities.
  • Perform iterative modeling of individual measures and packages of measures, including interactive effects, to determine the impact of alternative building designs.
  • Calculate annual electricity and fuel savings, peak demand reductions, utility cost savings, incremental costs, simple payback, and other economic metrics used to support design decisions and program participation.
  • Translate modeling results into practical, technically feasible energy efficiency recommendations appropriate to the project's design stage, operating requirements, budget, and performance objectives.
  • Participate in meetings and technical discussions with owners, developers, architects, MEP engineers, contractors, utility representatives, and program staff to explain findings and support incorporation of recommended measures.
  • Review model inputs, schedules, assumptions, system configurations, outputs, and results for reasonableness and consistency; troubleshoot discrepancies and document modeling methodologies.
  • Prepare calculations and documentation needed to establish eligible savings, incremental costs, incentive calculations, and compliance with applicable new construction program requirements.
  • Analyze high-efficiency heat pumps, heat recovery, all-electric designs, advanced controls, high-performance envelopes, and other strategies that reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Develop energy modeling reports, savings analyses, technical memoranda, presentations, recommendation summaries, and supporting documentation for clients and program stakeholders.
  • Apply lessons from completed projects to improve modeling approaches, technical tools, design recommendations, program processes, and customer outcomes.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supporting utility-sponsored commercial new construction, high-performance building, or other incentive programs.
  • Experience performing energy analysis at conceptual design, schematic design, design development, and construction document stages and working with design teams to influence building performance.
  • PE, CEM, BEMP, HBDP, LEED AP, or other relevant energy, engineering, or high-performance building certification.
  • Experience with ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G Performance Rating Method, LEED energy performance modeling, code compliance modeling, or similar whole-building performance approaches.
  • Experience evaluating heat pumps, heat recovery, all-electric designs, advanced controls, high-performance envelopes, and other building decarbonization strategies.
  • Experience evaluating utility rates, incremental costs, lifecycle costs, simple payback, incentive economics, and the financial impacts of individual measures and measure packages.
  • Experience with a range of commercial and institutional facilities such as office, healthcare, education, hospitality, multifamily, retail, public sector, or industrial buildings.
