Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Criminology, Corrections, Counseling, Law, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Business Management, Public Administration, Education, or a job-related field of study.
  • Skill in using standard software applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public.
  • Must obtain Probation Officer certification within six months of employment.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Must complete mandatory drug testing before employment and remain subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Must be able to work in a 24-hour facility, including mandatory overtime, double shifts, and shift changes as required.
  • Must be physically able to restrain and chase youths and perform handling-with-care techniques, including takedowns, chasing, and restraining youth, as required by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
  • Must be able to work with juveniles who may have committed dangerous or aggressive acts in an emotionally demanding and stressful environment.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age for applicable positions and pass all portions of the Juvenile Academy or applicable PREA and Ethics standards.
  • Must be willing and able to work as essential personnel, including being held over or called back to a work location or alternate site.
  • Must be able to work inside a secured facility with potential exposure to hepatitis, tuberculosis, lice, and other diseases.
Responsibilities
  • Provides professional casework, supervision, counseling, and rehabilitation services for youthful offenders committed to the custody of divisions within the Juvenile Department.
  • Conducts intake and risk assessments to determine appropriate supervision levels and intervention programs.
  • Performs diagnosis, investigations, crisis intervention, case planning, and report writing as assigned.
  • Determines the disposition of youths and provides appropriate resources to meet the immediate needs of youths and their families.
  • Consults with family members, school officials, and other parties to understand youths and tailor services to their needs.
  • Plans treatment programs related to education, drug or alcohol treatment, camp or foster care placement, and other community-based treatment to modify deviant behaviors.
  • Counsels youths and families regarding behavior, school, responsibility, attitudes, goals, consequences of actions, and related concerns; discusses rehabilitation progress and conducts crisis intervention sessions.
  • Documents casework contacts, status changes, progress, and problems; prepares accurate court reports; and maintains case records.
  • Responds to inquiries and serves as a liaison with schools, community agencies, law enforcement, Child Protective Services, Mental Health and Mental Retardation services, and other agencies.
  • Supervises youths in holding areas and responds to emergencies that may require chasing, carrying, or restraining youths.
  • Transports youths from police custody and may transport youths to appointments.
  • Attends required staff training and meetings.
  • Serves as backup to staff and performs duties such as administering medications, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of job-related experience in casework, counseling, community supervision, or group work in a social services, community, corrections, or juvenile agency serving offenders or disadvantaged persons.
