Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program is strongly preferred.
  • Two years of experience in a similar healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support or cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification, or certification obtained within 60 days of hire, is required through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time, up to eight hours at a time.
  • Ability to use fingers continually for patient care, writing, and computer entry.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds, push a supply cart weighing up to 30 pounds, and push a wheelchair with a patient weighing up to 325 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, reach above shoulder level, hear normal conversation, and use good near and peripheral vision.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Manage appointment scheduling and track referrals.
  • Open and close the office as required.
  • Capture patient demographic information.
  • Attend departmental meetings and participate in resolving identified problems.
  • Analyze current procedures and bring improvement suggestions to team members and supervisors.
  • Conduct pre-visit planning by reviewing and updating medical records with recent test results and correspondence, and determine needed services in consultation with physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants.
  • Complete pre-charting of value-based items up to five days before patient appointments and send messages to the care team when warranted.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and escort them to examination rooms, including recording height, weight, vital signs, medications, allergies, personal, family, and social history, smoking status, and reason for visit.
  • Provide patient care services as directed, including cleaning examination rooms, maintaining clinical supplies, cleaning and autoclaving contaminated instruments, administering injections or immunizations within the state-approved scope of practice, performing phlebotomy, pulmonary function testing, nebulizer treatments, electrocardiograms, and assisting with obstetric and gynecologic examinations.
  • Dispose of biohazardous and regular waste according to practice protocol.
  • Maintain vaccine temperature logs, inventory and order medical supplies, dispose of expired sample medications, and stock rooms to established par levels.
  • Schedule outpatient testing, pre-certify patients for procedures, process referrals, respond to patient communications, refill medications according to practice protocol, and provide visit-related information to patients.
  • Communicate and coordinate with providers and care coordinators regarding hospital discharges, emergency department visits, consulting physicians, community resources, disease management, patient self-management, chronic-condition education, individualized care plans, and follow-up contacts.
  • Review in-basket clinical pool messages and complete the information needed to clear them.
  • Maintain the referral work queue and update notes for communication with other departments.
  • Complete the applicable 30-, 60-, and 90-day onboarding checklist and demonstrate mastery of skills relevant to the service line.
