Sony Music and UMG unite in Japan with 'NINE BY NINE' festival venture.

Sony Music and UMG unite in Japan with 'NINE BY NINE' festival venture. The company's first festival is slated for 2027, though details around location, lineup and investment scale have yet to be disclosed. Musicbusinessworldwide.com In a rare show of alignment between two global rivals, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group have launched a joint venture in Japan aimed at scaling live music experiences across Asia. The new Tokyo-based company, NINE BY NINE Inc., was officially established on April 1 and will focus on producing music festivals while supporting the international expansion of Japanese artists. Headquartered in Shibuya, the venture will be led by Ichiro Tamaki of Universal Music Japan as President, alongside Sony Music's Hidehiko Otani as Vice President. The partnership stands out in an industry typically defined by competition, particularly in Japan, one of the world's largest and most tightly contested music markets. But both companies are betting on a shared opportunity: the accelerating global demand for Japanese music and culture. In a joint statement, Sony Music and UMG pointed to the rising international visibility of Japanese artists, fueled by anime, social media and increasing outbound touring activity. At the same time, inbound tourism tied to live music experiences has grown, creating new demand for large-scale events. By combining their global networks, infrastructure and market expertise, the two majors aim to create high-impact live events that connect regional audiences with Japanese talent, while also building pathways for those artists to break internationally. The company's first festival is slated for 2027, though details around location, lineup and investment scale have yet to be disclosed. The move reflects a broader shift in how major labels are approaching global growth. Rather than relying solely on recorded music and streaming, companies are increasingly investing in live experiences and cross-market collaborations to build cultural momentum.

Sony Music and UMG form NINE BY NINE music festivals joint venture in Japan.

Sony Music and UMG form NINE BY NINE music festivals joint venture in Japan. April 9, 2026 Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group have established a joint venture in Tokyo aimed at producing music festivals across Asia. The new company called NINE BY NINE Inc. was established on April 1, 2026, and is headquartered in Shibuya. Ichiro Tamaki of Universal Music Japan, was named President of the joint venture, while Sony Music's Hidehiko Otani was named Vice President. They both serve as Representative Directors. NINE BY NINE will engage in planning and production of music festivals in Asia, and supporting Japanese artists seeking to expand internationally, according to a joint announcement. The partnership is an unusual one as both Sony Music and Universal Music are fierce competitors for artist and market share in Japan and globally. In a joint statement, the companies highlighted the increasing global attention for Japanese music, driven by Japanese anime and social media, as well as the success of overseas tours by Japanese artists. "With inbound tourism focused on music experiences also thriving, the importance of platforms for showcasing the Japanese music scene to a global audience is increasing," they said. "SME and UM have established a new company, NINE BY NINE, to combine the knowledge, expertise, and global networks that both companies have cultivated over many years in the entertainment field, and to jointly host Japanese music festivals, primarily in the Asian region." Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group "Against this backdrop of changing market conditions, SME and UM have established a new company, NINE BY NINE, to combine the knowledge, expertise, and global networks that both companies have cultivated over many years in the entertainment field, and to jointly host Japanese music festivals, primarily in the Asian region." NINE BY NINE's first event is scheduled for 2027, although the companies have not announced a location or the artists involved. Sony Music and UMG also didn't disclose the ownership split between the two companies, or their planned scale of investment. The companies said: "By developing high-quality live experiences and effective promotions, primarily in the Asian region, we will create opportunities for local fans to connect with Japanese artists and support the long-term success of Japanese music." They also hinted at plans to promote the expansion of partnerships with other companies. Sony Music's Japan office is led by President and CEO Atsuhiro Iwakami, while UMG's Tokyo office is led by President and CEO Naoshi Fujikura. Both Sony Music and UMG have sharpened their focus on the Japanese market in recent years. Sony Music, whose parent company Sony Group is headquartered in Japan, had indicated plans to bring Japanese-language music to global audiences. In an exclusive World Leaders interview, Manubu Tsujino, Representative Director & President, Sony Music Labels, told MBW in 2024: "We have long believed that for Japanese music to make its way into the global market... The global strategy for Japanese music has just begun. I believe that rather than focusing on a one or two-year perspective, we need to aim for a five or 10-year outlook." In 2025, UMG's Fujikura told MBW in a separate World Leaders interview: "We have focused on creating a company that through working together, has been able to help lead and accelerate change in Japanese music culture and fan consumption." "We have done it, we are doing it, and we will continue to do it in Japan, but we also have expanded our horizons and our ambitions. That is why we want to make global stars from Japan, so people outside can also discover our artists, and enjoy their music as well." Music Business Worldwide

NSYNC choreographer sues Sony over Deadpool's 'Bye Bye Bye' dance in Fortnite.

NSYNC choreographer sues Sony over Deadpool's 'Bye Bye Bye' dance in Fortnite. Published Apr 6, 2026, 4:06 AM EDT Vaspaan Dastoor is a News Editor for TheGamer. He has been in the industry since 2017, previously working as the senior editor at IGN India and in the advertising world before that. While international games news is his forte, he loves telling the world about India's growth in the industry. He loves scouring the depths of the internet for niche or community-focused news, and always attempts to make you laugh along the way. With a weird affinity for top-down perspectives, the likes of Diablo, Baldur's Gate 3, and The Ascent all make Vaspaan's list. However, he's also an avid fan of the Mortal Kombat series, to the extent that he even liked the 3D games. Remember the intro for Deadpool & Wolverine, where the former slices through enemies while dancing to NSYNC's 'Bye Bye Bye'? Well, it turns out that the original choreographer who came up with the dance isn't too happy that the dance eventually made its way from Sony Music to a Marvel property, and eventually into Fortnite. Choreographer Darrin Henson has sued Sony for alleged unauthorized use of the dance, which featured in the movies, and now as an emote in Fortnite. The lawsuit, which was filed on March 27 says that Sony did not have the authority to license his dance out to other properties. Check The Bye Bye Bye laws. As reported by Billboard (via Insider Gaming), the lawsuit filed by Henson against Sony Music Holdings alleges that it didn't have permission to license out the dance to Marvel and Fortnite. "The reality is that the work belongs to Henson, and to obtain full acknowledgment of his ownership and a complete transfer of all monies earned by SME and its licensees, the plaintiff must seek declaratory relief from the court," says the lawsuit. It went on to state that the dance first appeared at the 1999 Radio Music Awards, where NSYNC performed. Henson even won the MTV Video Music Award for his choreography in 2000. While Epic Games isn't named in the lawsuit itself, it mentions that Sony wasn't authorized to license the dance. Epic removed the Peacemaker dance, altered it, then brought it back. Oct 8, 2025 The Bye Bye Bye emote was added to Fortnite in September 2024, but was only available in the game's store for four days. With this new development, it seems unlikely that the dance will return to the game. Fortnite itself hasn't been doing too well, according to Epic Games. Not only did it increase the price of V-Bucks to be able to "pay the bills", but it also recently let go of over 1,000 staff members, including the likes of Jonesy creator, Vitaliy Naymushin. You wouldn't expect the developer of Fortnite to be struggling, but that's just the current state of the industry. * OpenCritic Reviews - Top Critic Avg: 84/100 Critics Rec: 94% * Released - September 26, 2017 * ESRB - T for Teen - Diverse Content: Discretion Advised, In-Game Purchases, Users Interact * Developer(s) - Epic Games * Publisher(s) - Epic Games * Engine - Unreal Engine 5 * Genre(s) - Survival, Battle Royale, Shooter, Action, Adventure

Josplay, Sony Music partner to broaden access to African music catalogue.

Josplay, Sony Music partner to broaden access to African music catalogue. Vanessa Obioha Josplay, an Afrocentric audio platform serving the global African diaspora, has announced a content partnership with Sony Music Entertainment aimed at expanding access to African and global music catalogues for listeners worldwide. Under the agreement, Josplay users will gain access to a significant portion of Sony Music's catalogue, including recordings distributed through The Orchard, as well as the complete catalogues of Lusafrica and Africa Nostra - labels acquired by Sony Music France and Sony Music Publishing France in 2025. The Lusafrica and Africa Nostra catalogues together feature more than 4,000 titles spanning over three decades of Lusophone and African music. Among the notable artists included are the Cape Verdean Cesária Évora, widely regarded for popularising morna music globally, alongside Bonga, Boubacar Traoré, and Lura. The partnership also extends to Sony Music's global roster, leveraging The Orchard's distribution infrastructure across key African markets, including South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya. Speaking on the development, Josplay's Chief Operating Officer, George Ogala, said the collaboration aligns with the platform's mission to reflect the diversity of African music. "This partnership deepens the catalogue available on Josplay while reinforcing why we built this platform in the first place. African music is not one thing - it is Juju and Gnawa, Morna and Amapiano, Afrohouse and Tishoumaren," he said. To mark the partnership, Josplay will expand access to its "Frames" feature, a listening experience designed to reflect culturally specific music consumption habits. Unlike traditional playlists, Frames allows users to curate sessions around daily activities, such as commuting or unwinding, using culturally rooted "seed" songs, albums, or artists, while introducing new music through a personalised discovery mix. The company stated that the feature is designed to preserve the diversity of African music traditions, rather than flattening them into broad categories, and offers listeners a more contextual and culturally relevant experience. Josplay, which delivers music, news, stories, and audiobooks to African audiences globally, said the partnership underscores its broader commitment to amplifying African culture and improving discovery for diaspora listeners.
