Helcim raises $53M at $250M valuation as RBC, BMO sell Moneris to US buyer

The Business Development Bank of Canada's growth venture unit has led a $53-million equity financing in Calgary-based payments processor Helcim, valuing the company at $250 million. This represents a significant increase from Helcim's $97-million valuation in its previous 2024 capital raise. The financing comes as Canadian banks exit the payments processing sector. Helcim CEO Nicolas Beique told The Globe and Mail the company experienced "a huge influx of business" after TD Bank sold its payments unit to Milwaukee-based Fiserv last year. The recent $2-billion sale of Moneris Solutions by RBC and BMO to Francisco Partners is expected to further accelerate Helcim's growth, as domestic merchants seek Canadian alternatives amidst data sovereignty concerns.
