API Engineering Intern

Summary

Guidewire is seeking a motivated and curious Software Engineering Intern to join our team and contribute to the development of cutting-edge APIs and microservices. This internship is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience designing, architecting, and maintaining a scalable, event-driven microservices system as part of HazardHub NextGen, the industry’s most comprehensive platform for property, casualty, and hazard risk data in the P&C insurance space.

Job Description

As an intern, you will be paired with an experienced Software Engineer and play an integral role in shaping the future of our geospatial and hazard data services. You’ll gain exposure to real-world software engineering practices and contribute meaningfully to our production systems.

What You’ll Do:

• Collaborate with your mentor and other engineers to design, build, and maintain APIs and microservices that power HazardHub’s data products.

• Contribute to architectural and technology decisions related to middle-tier services, API structure, and database design.

• Develop and maintain geospatial APIs and microservices that deliver hazard and risk-related data efficiently and securely.

• Investigate and troubleshoot live systems, identify bugs, and assist in implementing fixes and enhancements.

• Participate in code reviews, share your ideas, and grow your software development skills in a supportive team environment.

Technologies You’ll Work With:

• OpenAPI – for designing and documenting RESTful APIs

• REST – for API design and communication

• SQL – for querying and managing data

• Go (Golang) – primary programming language for service development

• PostGIS – geospatial database extension for PostgreSQL

• Kubernetes – for container orchestration and deployment

• Helm – for managing Kubernetes applications

• Terraform – for infrastructure as code

• GitHub & GitHub Actions – for version control and CI/CD

Intern Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a BS or MS program in Computer Science, with an expected graduation date from Spring 2025 to Spring 2026

• Programming proficiency in Java, Python & React or other modern OO programming languages.

• Analytical and structured thinker—you can break down complex challenges, identify patterns, and frame solutions that align with business goals.

• Excellent communication skills-with the ability to translate customer and market insights into actionable product strategies.

• Collaborative and adaptable-able to work effectively with product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders.

• Comfort with ambiguity—you enjoy tackling open-ended challenges and iterating on ideas based on discovery and feedback.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $50,000 - $96,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
