  • Knowledge of the proper care and operation of a school bus and safe driving skills.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing school bus operation.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, and Google Apps.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and convey safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to understand and comply with the Wake County Public School System Code of Ethics.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form using communication techniques and tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, external agencies, and the community.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Successful leadership experience is required.
  • A valid North Carolina driver's license held for at least two years is required.
  • A North Carolina Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements is required; CDL training will be provided if needed.
  • Commercial Driver's License holders must meet North Carolina medical qualification standards applicable to commercial drivers.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  • Candidates must pass Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing at hire, randomly, and upon request.
  • The stated driving-record restrictions must be met, including restrictions on moving violations, driving while impaired or driving under the influence, reckless driving, passing a stopped school bus, and license suspension or revocation.
  • The role requires the ability to use office equipment, communicate effectively, and perform medium physical work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling.
  • The role requires working in an office, school bus, or school transportation vehicle and exposure to noise, fumes, vibrations, and varying road, traffic, and weather conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Schedule substitute bus drivers and combine routes without disrupting school arrival and departure times.
  • Assist in coordinating morning and afternoon student transportation based on available drivers.
  • Assist drivers in learning routes.
  • Perform bus inspections for cleanliness and safety, and assist in maintaining daily pre-trip inspection logs and student count sheets.
  • Assist in assigning field-trip and midday routes and maintain the related route documents.
  • Use Cherwell, the Transportation Information Management System, and Global Positioning System software to track delayed school buses and notify school administration and the public.
  • Train bus drivers on techniques for managing inappropriate student behavior and parental concerns.
  • Operate a school bus according to the assigned route when needed and discharge students only at authorized schools or bus-stop locations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Transportation Information Management System and Cherwell service-management software is preferred.
  • Operational understanding of bus Global Positioning System software is preferred.
  • First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification is preferred.
  • Bloodborne pathogens certification is preferred.
  • Experience driving a commercial vehicle is preferred.
  • Having no more than one charge of any moving violation, regardless of disposition, is preferred.
