Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current appropriate state licensure and compliance with practice requirements in the state of employment.
  • Successful completion of a training course in the theory and practice of hemodialysis.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Successful completion of the Ishihara Color Blindness test requirements, with reasonable accommodation considered where applicable.
  • Completion of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision coding training.
  • Completion of Nurses Technical Training.
  • Coverage at any or all area facilities as required by management.
  • Ability to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and occasional movement of machines or equipment weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to infectious and contagious diseases or materials.
Responsibilities
  • Direct Patient Care Technicians and delegate tasks to direct patient-care staff, including licensed vocational or practical nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Dialysis Assistants.
  • Assess daily patient-care needs and develop appropriate patient-care assignments.
  • Monitor patient-care staff techniques and adherence to facility policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff training, new-staff orientation, and required staff meetings.
  • Educate patients and families about end-stage renal disease, renal disease, vascular access, dialysis therapy, diet, fluid and medication compliance, laboratory values, and treatment adequacy.
  • Provide safe and effective care to patients with end-stage renal disease receiving chronic hemodialysis.
  • Implement treatment prescriptions, including sodium and ultrafiltration modeling, and adjust treatment plans based on patient response and physician direction.
  • Perform nursing assessments and ongoing evaluation and documentation of patient-care needs.
  • Participate in pre-evaluation, initiation, monitoring, termination, access homeostasis, and post-evaluation of hemodialysis treatment.
  • Troubleshoot access-flow issues and intervene for changes in patient adequacy status identified by Online Clearance Monitoring or the Adequacy Monitoring Program.
  • Provide, supervise when applicable, and monitor hemodialysis access care.
  • Administer and document prescribed interdialytic transfusions and report adverse reactions.
  • Review, transcribe, and enter physician orders, laboratory orders, laboratory results, and treatment data into the Medical Information System.
  • Prepare, process, package, and route laboratory specimens in accordance with applicable procedures and Department of Transportation requirements.
  • Report alert, panic, and abnormal laboratory results to the appropriate physician.
  • Enforce company policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain safe, efficient, and effective shift operations.
  • Act as a resource for staff members and communicate with the Clinical Manager about personnel and patient-care issues.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare team members to interpret, adjust, and coordinate patient care.
  • Administer prescribed and as-needed medications, document effectiveness and medical justification when required, and maintain controlled-substance records.
  • Initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency measures when indicated and ensure adequate emergency equipment is available.
  • Ensure appropriate vaccinations, immunizations, and annual tuberculosis testing.
  • Coordinate patient transportation when necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary dialysis treatment environment and ensure proper cleaning of patient stations, machines, chairs, and blood spills.
  • Ensure competency in the safe and effective operation of dialysis-related equipment.
  • Implement patient admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
  • Verify Patient Care Technician documentation and ensure completion of hemodialysis treatment sheets.
  • Complete Continuous Quality Improvement activities, monthly reports, nurses' progress notes, patient care plans, long-term programs, nursing histories and assessments, and annual standing-order reviews.
  • Review transplant status and follow established procedures.
  • Ensure opening and closing procedures are completed and that staff and patients have safely left the premises.
  • Perform additional assigned duties.

  • A minimum of one year of medical-surgical nursing experience is preferred.
  • Hemodialysis experience is preferred.
  • Intensive care unit experience is preferred.
