About the job
- Experience with a variety of strength equipment and free weights and knowledge of current fitness trends.
- Ability to stand and walk for extensive periods and participate in or demonstrate exercise and fitness activities.
- Ability to lift at least 20 pounds.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification covering adults and children/infants, obtained within 30 days of hire from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety & Health Institute.
- Must be fingerprinted before reporting to work and comply with subsequent arrest notifications.
- Monitor workout areas for potential hazards and keep areas organized and tidy, including reracking free weights and putting magazines away.
- Be aware of and enforce fitness center weight room policies.
- Keep workout equipment and areas clean, including wiping down machines during the shift as needed.
- Design and deliver training and equipment-orientation programs that meet individual members' needs and support participant goals.
- Provide basic information and instruction on proper use of fitness equipment.
- Represent the YMCA by using tools and information such as handouts, charts, and brochures to increase member knowledge of fitness and other YMCA programs.
- Avoid offering injury diagnoses or advice.
- Greet members, participants, volunteers, and staff and provide customer service, guidance, and leadership.
- Be punctual and professional.
- Be available for a 4:45 a.m. opening shift; Monday-Friday shifts are typically four hours, with varying days as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

San Diego, CA – June 28, 2023 – The YMCA of San Diego County proudly announces the appointment of Margie Newman Tsay to a two-year term as chair of the nonprofit’s board of directors, effective July 1.
The Center is partnering with San Diego Youth Services and the YMCA of San Diego to provide case management, transportation assistance, employment support, outreach to youth on the streets and basic needs such as food, showers, mail service, laundry and clothing.
