Sarasota Memorial hospital plans Manatee County expansion along Interstate 75. September 23, 2026 4:45 PM Gift Article Land previously planned for commercial space, residential and affordable housing is heading toward a different use. Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMH) announced plans to purchase about 120 acres at the southeast corner of Interstate 75 and State Road 64 East. The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board approved the nearly $60 million land deal on Tuesday. For it to advance, SMH needs Manatee County officials and community leaders to rezone and develop a future campus on the site, according to a news release. The move follows the hospital board's July approval to buy a 10-acre adjacent parcel with direct access to State Road 64 East. "This investment reflects the kind of long-range planning that has allowed Sarasota Memorial to serve our region for more than a century," SMH CEO David Verinder said. "Healthcare infrastructure takes years to plan and build. Securing strategically located property today allows us to improve our capacity to care for the community now, while enhancing access for future generations." Original plans for the land. In 2024, nearly 1,400 housing units, including more than 300 affordable ones, were proposed for the land at the southeast corner of I-75 and State Road 64 East. That land is located across from the Marketplace at Heritage Harbour shopping plaza that is home to several restaurants and stores such as Costco, Target, Cava, Seasons 52 and LongHorn Steakhouse. SMH projects the Suncoast, which includes Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and DeSoto counties, to grow from about 1.2 million to 1.8 million residents in the next 25 years. According to a news release, future development would occur in phases with the 10-acre parcel getting developed first, pending development approvals. That first phase would include a freestanding emergency department, with additional phases to include primary and specialty physician practices, pediatric specialty care, imaging, diagnostic and laboratory services and other medical buildings to support a full-service hospital campus. Population growth spurs hospital need. Manatee County is projected to see a 9.6% growth in population in the next five years, SMH said in a news release. Sarasota Memorial has an existing outpatient facility in the Heritage Harbour area. Patient volume has more than doubled since 2020 at the existing facility, the hospital said in a news release. Adding a new campus will "relieve capacity pressures" at the flagship location off U.S. 41 in Sarasota, according to a news release. SMH employs nearly 3,500 people across its four-county reach, with 30% of its workforce living in Manatee County. "County boundaries do not define where patients seek care or where healthcare professionals choose to live and work," Verinder said in the news release. "Our responsibility is to plan for the communities we already serve today and the communities we know will continue to grow tomorrow." New hospitals planned for Manatee County. Sarasota Memorial's land acquisition marks the third new planned hospital for Manatee County. BayCare broke ground earlier this year on Parrish's first hospital. Located at 6730 Moccasin Wallow Road in the Robinson Gateway property about one mile north of the I-75 and I-275 intersection, BayCare's hospital project in Parrish is expected to be completed in 2028. HCA Florida Healthcare is also building a hospital north of the Manatee River off Moccasin Wallow Road. The Bradenton Herald previously reported the HCA hospital is getting built at 9308 Fort Hamer Road. A completion date has not been announced. SARASOTA, Fla. - Flagship Healthcare Properties (Flagship), an outpatient healthcare real estate firm, is pleased to announce Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMH) has executed a lease for the entirety of an approximately 54,000-square-foot medical outpatient building planned at 2695 Curry Lane in Venice, adjacent to Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice campus. The three-story facility, which will be situated on about five acres, was planned as a multi-tenant medical outpatient building. Sarasota Memorial previously committed to a portion of the project for outpatient endoscopy services and a new home for SMH First Physicians Group's gastroenterologists. The expanded commitment to occupy the entire building will allow Sarasota Memorial to significantly increase outpatient services in Venice, including bringing a range of advanced cancer services from its Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute closer to patients in south Sarasota County. The transaction represents the largest new lease executed in Flagship's history, and marks a significant milestone in the firm's continued expansion throughout Florida. The site was acquired by Flagship in January 2025 and is strategically positioned to support the continued growth of the hospital campus and surrounding communities. Jellison Cancer Institute, and comes just months after Sarasota Memorial opened its third premier cancer facility, the new Milman-Kover Cancer Pavilion, on the SMH-Sarasota campus. SMH established the Jellison Cancer Institute in 2020 to give cancer patients greater access to advanced treatments, technologies, clinical trials and supportive care close to home, and it has since been recognized among the highest-volume cancer centers in Florida. "Cancer treatment can require frequent appointments with multiple specialists and care teams, sometimes over many months," said Kelli Dancer, vice president of the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute. As proposed, a radiation oncology center and medical, surgical and radiation oncology physician clinics will be built on the first floor. (WWSB) - Sarasota Memorial Health Care System has been named to Forbes' list of America's Best-in-State Employers for a seventh consecutive year, the health system announced. SMH said it ranked No. 17 among Florida employers recognized by Forbes and was the second-highest-rated health care organization in the state. Forbes compiled the ranking with market research firm Statista. According to SMH, the list was based on survey responses from more than 245,000 people working for U.S. companies with at least 500 employees. Workers evaluated employers on wages and benefits, management, workplace culture, flexibility and career advancement opportunities, SMH said. The health system employs more than 11,000 people across its hospitals, specialty care centers and outpatient services. SMH identifies itself as Sarasota County's largest employer. "This recognition belongs to every member of our team and reflects the extraordinary skill, compassion and dedication they bring to their work and to the people who depend on us," SMH CEO David Verinder said in a news release.
