Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant is required for the physician assistant pathway.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Ability to provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority or hospital privileges, where applicable.
- Ability to perform heavy or hard work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, repetitive movements, standing, walking, sitting, and using telemedicine equipment weighing more than 40 pounds.
Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients within the scope of practice and area of specialty.
- Complete comprehensive patient health evaluations, including biological, social, and psychological assessments, comorbid conditions, overall disposition, and guardians or caregivers, in collaboration with the clinical or faculty team.
- Assess and coordinate patients' and caretakers' educational and psychosocial needs through telemedicine technology while protecting patient privacy.
- Develop and review plans of care with the clinical team, participate in directing care, and coordinate discharge planning or follow-up.
- Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families via telemedicine technology.
- Complete emergency-room telepsychiatry consultations.
- Complete integrated assessments and communicate the information to the Behavioral Medicine clinical team.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with designated faculty or under established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings in patient evaluations.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations via telemedicine and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge and follow-up with appropriate services and arrange outpatient follow-up appointments when applicable.
- Develop individualized plans of care that include teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Provide care for patients across the age continuum consistent with educational experience and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in ambulatory settings or admission for further diagnostic and therapeutic intervention.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage patients' and families' needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain knowledge throughout the year and complete identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate in the area of expertise.
- Document each patient's plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record in accordance with hospital and University Health Associates policies and documentation standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in telemedicine practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret care data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, and work around telemedicine and computer equipment.
Desired Qualifications
- Telemedicine experience is preferred for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Psychiatry experience and/or telemedicine experience is preferred for the physician assistant pathway.
- Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred.
- Family Nurse Practitioner and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certifications are considered.
- A Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
- Psychiatry Certificate of Added Qualifications is preferred.
