- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Successful completion of a polysomnography program of at least one year associated with a state-licensed or nationally accredited educational facility, or at least six months of experience as a polysomnographic trainee with documented proficiency in all required competencies, is required.
- An active or temporary New Jersey polysomnography technician license is required.
- Registration as an RPSGT through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists, an RST through the American Board of Sleep Medicine, or another health care professional license that includes polysomnography within its scope of practice, such as registered nurse or registered respiratory therapist, is required.
- Current CPR/AED or BCLS certification is required.
- The technologist must understand and comply with state-agency recertification requirements, including a minimum of 10 continuing education credits.
- Perform routine and comprehensive polysomnographic procedures under the general oversight of an RPSGT polysomnographic technologist and/or the clinical director or designee.
- Follow protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency Tests, Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests, parasomnia studies, positive airway pressure and oxygen titration, and related procedures.
- Follow lights-out procedures to establish and document baseline values.
- Acquire polysomnographic data while monitoring tracing quality, ensuring signals are artifact-free, and making adjustments when necessary.
- Document routine observations, including sleep stages, clinical events, procedural changes, and other significant events, to facilitate scoring and interpretation of results.
- Implement appropriate patient-safety and therapeutic interventions, including continuous or bi-level positive airway pressure and oxygen administration.
- Follow lights-on procedures to verify collected-data integrity and complete the data-collection process; instruct patients on completing questionnaires.
- Provide age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Assist with scoring sleep/wake stages using professionally accepted guidelines.
- Assist with scoring clinical events, including respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, and arousals, according to center-specific protocols.
- Assist with generating accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical-event data.
- Review, verify, and document patient history, physical condition, and study protocol.
- Orient patients and explain procedures.
- Maintain complete and detailed documentation during procedures.
- Prepare and properly calibrate equipment required for testing.
- Maintain a clean and professional environment.
- Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, standards, and infection-control policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
