About the Job

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of industry experience in optical engineering or optical system design, including multiple products successfully commercialized.
  • Expertise in optical design and analysis in Zemax OpticStudio, including sequential and non-sequential modeling, optimization, and tolerancing.
  • Extensive hands-on experience operating typical optical engineering workbench equipment, with strong optical alignment, testing, and characterization skills.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with contract research organizations, contract development and manufacturing organizations, and contract manufacturers, with understanding of make-versus-buy tradeoffs and transferring optical designs from prototype to volume manufacturing.
  • Deep understanding of optical principles, including aberrations, diffraction, radiometry, polarization, and detector/sensor selection.
  • Working knowledge of optomechanical design, optomechanical precision-alignment prototyping, thermal effects, and system-calibration methods.
  • A Master of Science or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • A track record of leading complex optical-system development programs from concept through commercialization.

Responsibilities

  • Define the optical architecture and long-term technical strategy for next-generation high-throughput DNA sequencing platforms, aligning with product performance, scalability, manufacturability, and business objectives.
  • Lead end-to-end design, modeling, and optimization of optical systems for a high-throughput DNA sequencer, spanning illumination, imaging, and detection paths.
  • Establish the optical technology roadmap by evaluating emerging technologies, identifying technical risks, and leading feasibility studies for future platform capabilities.
  • Develop breadboard systems and conduct proof-of-concept experiments and early prototyping before system integration.
  • Perform optical design, ray tracing, tolerance analysis, and stray-light analysis in Zemax OpticStudio to meet resolution, field-of-view, throughput, and signal-to-noise requirements.
  • Drive optical trade studies balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, and yield to converge on a robust, high-sensitivity architecture.
  • Build, align, test, and characterize optical prototypes and subsystems on the bench, developing fixtures and procedures for repeatable alignment.
  • Define specifications, drawings, tolerances, and acceptance criteria for custom optical components, coatings, and sources.
  • Partner with development and manufacturing contractors to integrate optical systems and transfer designs to production, managing performance, manufacturability, and cost tradeoffs.
  • Lead the optical system through feasibility, design verification, design transfer, and commercial launch.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, assay, and manufacturing teams to integrate the optical subsystem into the full instrument and ensure system performance and reliability.
  • Author and review optical design documentation, analyses, and test protocols.
  • Lead optical system design reviews and advise on readiness for phase exits and production release.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing ultra-high-sensitivity detection systems, such as fluorescence, single-molecule, or low-light imaging.
  • Experience developing optical systems for life-science instruments, diagnostics, or genomics platforms.

About the Company

Sarmal

Builds DNA sequencing and genetic testing tools for labs

Sarmal develops DNA sequencing and genetic detection technology for research and clinical laboratories. Its single-molecule sequencing method tracks individual enzymes as they copy DNA, aiming to produce fast, very long and highly accurate reads. A second platform for rapid target detection captures specific genetic sequences and detects them in one process, cutting background signal and false positive or false negative results in genetic testing. The company plans to equip laboratories with integrated instruments and consumable supplies, and it invites clinical labs to partner on its rapid diagnostic and sequencing technologies. Sarmal is based in San Diego, California.
