Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field is required.
  • Coursework in power systems, electrical engineering, power system components, and mathematical modeling of power system components is required.
  • An analytical approach to problem solving is required.
  • Strong team and interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross-functionally are required.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to clearly articulate technical problems and solutions are required.
  • The ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations is required.
  • The ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals is required.
  • The ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from managers, vendors, Market Participants, and the general public is required.

Responsibilities
  • Support the electric power system model used by scheduling and dispatch software.
  • Develop and apply working knowledge of the New York State high-voltage transmission system and network-model database software.
  • Support real-time power-system analysis, primarily through Energy Management Systems and Business Management Systems applications.
  • Support the development and evolution of Energy Management Systems, Energy Market Systems, and Smart-Grid application software.
  • Support and maintain Phasor Measurement Unit applications, including stand-alone visualization software and Energy Management Systems-based Voltage Stability Monitoring.
  • Support maintenance of Energy Management Systems and Phasor Data Acquisition and Control systems integration.
  • Support Smart-Grid application software integrity by developing and implementing Business Owner Quality Assurance procedures.
  • Support testing of Phasor Measurement Unit application functions with New York transmission owners and neighboring control areas.
  • Provide Power System Operations Dispatcher support for Smart-Grid applications including ePDC, Real-Time Dispatch and Market System, ePDE, and Grid-Smarts.
  • Develop and maintain software and operating procedures for special market and operating conditions under the guidance of managers or senior team members.
  • Collaborate with Energy Market Operations and Grid Operations personnel on new Market Design initiatives and Network Model projects, including the new Energy Management Systems and Business Management Systems platform.
  • Develop documentation for new Market Design initiatives and Network Model projects, including the new Energy Management Systems and Business Management Systems platform.
  • Perform Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing for new Market Design initiatives and Network Model projects.
  • Perform regression testing for new Market Design initiatives and Network Model projects to ensure correct market outcomes.
  • Implement modifications to the Unit Commitment program to support additional market functionality in the Mixed Integer Programming solution under the guidance of managers or senior team members.
  • Provide technical support to Energy Market Operations, Market Validation, Market Monitoring, IT Quality Assurance, and Stakeholder Services when responding to Market Participant questions.
  • Support Energy Market Operations testing efforts, including development of Unit Acceptance Test plans for projects affecting energy-market software.
  • Support Capacity Market Operations testing efforts, including development of resource adequacy, capacity auction, capacity expansion, and capacity accreditation models.
  • Provide implementation support to product teams by reviewing requirements documents and vendor design notes and developing User Acceptance Test plans for production deployment of enhancements and new features.
  • Support external NYISO research engagements under the direction of the Manager, Market Solutions Engineering.
  • Travel as required to attend or conduct meetings, conferences, and training.
  • Work nights, weekends, or holidays when required by business needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is desired.
  • Experience in Electrical Engineering or Operations Research with software simulation experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Energy Management Systems, Security Constrained Unit Commitment, Real-Time Scheduling, Grid View, GE-MAPS, PROMOD, AMPL, MATLAB, or GAMS is highly desirable.
  • Strong Python programming skills are desirable.
  • Working knowledge of shell scripting and the Linux command line is desirable.
  • Background in models and databases used in power-system analyses is desired.
  • Business experience in electric power systems or wholesale electric markets is desired.
  • Working knowledge of UNIX is desired.
