Requirements
  • Associate degree from an approved Respiratory Care program; for individuals licensed before December 31, 2008, a certificate of completion from an approved Respiratory Care program is accepted.
  • Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Current Basic Life Support/Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Advanced Life Support certification as appropriate for the unit and site.
  • No prior experience is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assess, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders.
  • Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures.
  • Maintain patient records and accurate, precise documentation.
  • Select, assemble, check, and operate respiratory-care equipment.
  • Demonstrate competency in respiratory therapeutics and the use of ventilators, pulmonary diagnostics, physiologic monitors, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and other equipment required for respiratory care.
  • Apply analytical reasoning and combine patient-care management skills with technical expertise.
  • Communicate openly and effectively with members of the healthcare team.
  • Perform quality control and maintenance of arterial blood gas analyzers, collect specimens, and analyze blood for gas transport and acid/base determinations.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with applicable policies and standards.
  • Maintain compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Active membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care.
